SSSN is certainly a crude metric but I was under the impression that STIX is more scientific. Correct me if I am wrong (wouldn't be the first time!) but STIX requires an inclination test and therefore measures the actual righting moment of the vessel and its angle of vanishing stability.

Modern series built boats have this data as it is required by the EU and so is measured by the builders. For boats like ours you'd have to pay for an individual inclination test - not cheap!

Sorry for endless questions - do CAT4 navigation lights include a 'steaming light' or are bow and stern lights sufficient?

Bow and stern (or a tricolor) is fine for a boat of the projection's size

Tim

Yes with STIX an inclination test is required at the owners cost as 762 when built never had this...and as you say muchas dollars...., but some are prepared to take this on in an aid to 1. enter lower CAT races and 2. lower the rating via stability factor in conjunction with endorsment more bucks!!!

This very reason why corby lead mines rate well is that the SSN/STIX numbers are high in terms of stability...making lower ratings but slightly more stayed racing performance. (sometimes).

One major reason why a 762 wont rate under SSN is that RORC still see it a type of sportboat. Most Sportsboats have enough factors to be bearly acceptable for day racing round the cans. Eg they have traits such as Melges with slack non continious guard rails (non cat 4 compliant), and low stability making for faster performance. The 762 is different to this as she can be easily made CAT 4 compliant and is deemed more of a mini yacht than a flat out sportsboat. As Tim has already suggested a 762 could in theory be CAT 3 compliant but you would have to reduce sail areas and add lots of lead to get the SSN number sufficient to do so. All this would produce is a very dull boat, not what the 762 was intended to be!

I was told that Rowan had  a 762 ready to roll and indeed if they (or any) 762's have been commissioned since the mandatory introduction of the STIX for newer age dates are they still using the guestimated older data relating to the SSSI calc's?

What I am trying to say is if you built a boat now would they have to carry out AVS tests??  Or do they just apply the same formula.

It obviously isnt the sort of boat you would want to do heavy weather offshore in, but I do think  the SSSI is too low.  Can we gather some similair sized boats numbers and post them up here.  What about J's etc?

Number off the top of my head so not perfect but approx...

Cork 1720 has a SSSN of 17 (can't do Cat 4 as no guardrails)

J80 is 12

Melges 24 is 6

Does anyone have the original brochure for the Projection?

I was thinking of an appeal on IRC hull factor and need accomodation and deck plans.

I think it is worth an appeal as HF is one higher than a Platu 25 and only one lower than a J80, both of which have much bigger cockpits, less accomodation, and more bulb like keels.

Gourmet meals will soon be served from the galley on Pink Fizz after racing!

Does the J80 have a more bulb like keel than a 762 ?  i would have thought not , however as my wife keeps telling me I'm generally wrong ...

We've had a slow start to the season , managed to get close to the melges one breezy race last sunday , a 3rd , don't know how we will beat them though ...

Doug .

Hi Peter

I've got a copy of the brochure - if you give me your email adress I'll send it to you
