I'm guessing the sail lifts the hull as well as driving it forward. "High performance sailing" has quite a lot on this type of design - apparently the unsteady nature of the wind was the problem and the idea was shevled.

This is one of the advantages of a SMOD... the floppy leech is not a very efficient use of limited sail area, but it is a very effective way to make the sail area easier to handle. So on a boat where you are free to choose sail design such a design will tend to be at a disadvantage because its not the best use of available sail area. On an SMOD this isn't an issue.

In this case too another advantage is that because the Cherub mast height restriction is really too short you are stuggling to get the area in without ending up with a very long boom. This design gets the area in and makes it controllable, so it looks like a good choice in the circumstances.

I'm rather less convinced about the short battens in the leech of both this sail and the Daemon one. I suspect that long battens give you better mid leech control with a very big roach as in the Kiwi 12 footer/R inspired rigs like Atum Boms. There won't be a rig like that at the trials though by the look of it.

What I find interesting about the GT 60 sail shape is it looks quite a clever mid way point between cat sails and floopy leech windsurf ideas, if I am seeing the indent in the leech correctly in the picture. ( third batten to top batten looks like the profile is dog legged out, having come in from the second batten )

As for that last pic ' contender 541 ' this is from the same mad brain....

it works like a bat wing. the mast is hinged and sprung ( I think ) as as you draw down on the rig the mast shortens and the leech opens up and the C of E lowers.

full battens.

edit:

but i've just looked again and it could be going back out from the top short batten to the very top full batten.

I'm fairly sure the leech is straight: it appears to be on the design drawing I've seen.

Maybe the twist in the leech corses an optical illusion of a dog leg?

The transition rig thing - that's a mirror hull! i'm sure...
