Nice too see some hardened winter sailors are still in existence. We have been back in the water for 6 weeks after Keel modifications. I plan to write up the work I have done. Anyone with the early keel (less bolts, lots of 10mm size) should maybe email me. I have carried out a mod with the help of Steven Thomas and Brian from Rowan. Boat feels good! Also just got weighed and measured. Boat weighed in at 1455kg. Significantly more than the 1300kg est. weight on the ticket. Awaiting new numbers, will keep you posted. May add a 48m2 kite to offset if trial cert works out. It is worth weighing I would think if you have est. weights. Also (and I think the best addition so far!) I have put a tohatsu 6hp 4 stroke engine on the back. I had a 2 stroke 4hp. Tohatsu is only 25kg (12l tank fitted below, half a gallon in). The power is uncomparable (ignore yank write ups on web - old models), 7 knts and it stops in reverse. Am awaiting the hi thrust prop and alternator to be fitted - its then the sail drive. We have 5 knts tide here and the boat is now more seaworthy. Anyone planning on dunlaoghrie this year, we will be there. Photros are too big to upload and this blog wont accept ZIP, how do you do it. Also will youtube a video of us overtaking Farr34.7 and J122!

Interesting to hear about the weight, have you put a different keel on. I reckon your IRC should go down quite a bit and would be interested to see the numbers.

No. Not at all, old keel with some additional bolts. I have drilled down through lead and added 3 x 24mm stainless stud, also core drilled right through keel and added 50mm piece of prop shaft which the stainless stud is threaded right the way through, then epoxied. Bit like a beefed up Ikea kit. The reason apparantly is common in earlier boats. They had the stainless top plate welded to the keel bolts. When you tightened the bolts you simply pulled the plate tighter to the hull, you could not increase upward tension on lead. The nature of soft and malleable lead means the stainless armature will need more tension with age. I noticed a sight movement upon "wobbling" in slings Bright side is apparantly all boats have had mod but mine! Now its had it with extra beef. Wouldnt increase mass as lead is denser than stainless. All other boats had mods out of first dozen with this type of keel. It seems all but mine were modified. The boat was weighed with cushions and battery ( a very small dry cell thing, also with 25kg 2 stroke outboard, with minimum fuel). Also been out the water for a while. Apparantly its 1 point per 50kg. That could give us 3 points 0.965. Still waiting for sail measurements......

I'm looking for advice from you IRC and SBR experts. I've been ordering some new sails.. Main and number 3 so far. Considering a 47m2 kite - we're still using the original spinnaker hoist position so I reckon that this is about the maximum useable kite size for this... What do you think? I've also asked for a price for a 135% genoa for our SBR application (that's the plan for the Scottish Series rather than IRC). Is this a sensible move or will it be too small for lighter breeze? We already have a 150% genoa... Let me know before I empty my bank account... |

47m2 kite is a good size with minimal impact on your rating, we're moving our hoist up 600mm for use with the 48m2 and using the old point as a choker for the 2 smaller kites @ 38m2. IRC are penalising fatter head mains more now but seem to allow for more area on at the back of the boom, does mean a less head room though. 135% is a good size, anything over 140% and you get hit. (i would like to know what just going for a lightweight and heavey weight 115% would do to the rating. just from my observations it doesnt knock your speed over the course as much as you'd think. best save that one for if's, buts and maybes though!) i'd still like to get hold of a Cork rig and keel and see what that does, but the bank account wont let that happen.....

Chic Im sure you dont need advice on sail design etc being a Hyde agent in scotland, But from a point of view from the kite size and it effect on an IRC rating we have found 45m2 to be a minimum size and 50m2 to be a max size for projection kites. Any more than 50m2 the rating goes through the roof and is more often than not completely unmanagable when windy. With regard to Headsail overlap area yes the smaller the overlap on the headsail the more the rating will drop. Obviously if you go too far the boat will stop in light airs as being a comparatively heavy hull we have found you need full area to keep her driving in the light stuff. We found 140 - 145% overlap to be the optimum between rating benefit + performance trade off.
