ideally i would like a new larger kite, of around 46sqm, better shape especially as our kite is about 10years old! but at the end os the day we've usually got some pretty handy trimmers onboard that know what they are doing and we dont seem to loose out for not having the area aloft. that said a bigger one would improve matters no end.

Chic Like Doug said Risky is a Melges 24 sailed out of Royal Northumberland Yacht Club, we normally go to scottish series either with our Melges or om my friends modified Melges 3 races per day make it hard work when the conditions are bad, but everybody in the class are freindly and helpfull. If you are going you should book accomodation no later than Jan to ensure you will get a place to crash.

Hi there Chic The 3/4 + 7/8 measurements are also know by RORC as mainsail three quater and Mainsail Upper widths. (MUW + MTW on your IRC certs.) You want these to the max before they penalise your rating. Ours are fully maxed and we do not get the rating hit. Our main measurements are: P: 9.22, E: 3.57, MUW: 0.84, MTW: 1.41, MHW: 2.35.... As I have said already said we have ground the gooseneck off to tack the main lower and increase the P measurement on the new main as there is space on the main track. The reason we ground the tack off the gooseneck as the standard z spars tack on the boom is 2" higher than the boom track. RORC rate the P measurement from the goosneck(track height)... Therefore every cm you can get unrated alters the P measurement on your IRC cert. It might not seem a lot of sail area but every little change to the P measurement means point movement on your Certificate.

Thanks Detente. Sorry if I seem a bit slow over this, but IRC doesn't feature on the East of Scotland and I'm still trying to learn what is useful. I'll use these measurements as a reference when I eventually get around to measuring my own boat. Does anyone else have any thoughts about IRC or Sportsboat Rule classes? We're well used to dodging bigger boats at the start line but what Risky B suggests is also attractive. Platu 25s are lethally fast in light winds, though... Thanks for advice about accommodation, I'll check that out v. soon. I have crewed on a Sonata at the Scottish Series, so I'm aware that there's a premium on floorspace! |

Doug, your sails sound expensive! Having spent all that time competing with fast sportsboats you must be getting seriously good... I haven't forgotten about coming to visit at some point but I've been a bit busy. Hopefully soon! |

Garth, I'd be happy to measure mine for you if you like - problem is I don't know how many square metres it is. It's Nigel Theadom's original asy I presume from when the boat was first built. Chic |

That assymetric must be a bit ragged by now Chic - everyone seems to have had their money's worth and some. It is 42sqm +/- the same area as the .6oz running symetrical that we used with it. |

Nigel, delighted to hear you're still following this thread! We've only used
your assymetric a couple of times for racing here - we rarely have a course that we can use it effectively, so it's actually not as bad as you might imagine... One repair near the head, that seems to be it. Still haven't managed to gybe it! We still use the runner for club racing sometimes.. I hope you're doing well. Chic |
