I need some advice from you IRC racers... We 're hoping to do the Scottish series this coming season.
There seems to be a concensus that big headsails incur a penalty and that spinnaker size is relatively 'cheap', but how about mainsails? Should I be going for a main short in the foot but with a bigger roach?? Maybe I should be putting this up for general discussion, but I'd like to ask other P762 owners first. |

big head mains get knocked, but you can put some extra into the foot towards the clew (does mean a low boom). jib - a number one and a cross 2/3 but probably could of gone for less overlap on both. spinnaker - about 44 - 46sqm (currently flying 38sqm!) just my thoughts on it. |

For mainsail area we have gone for max non penalty roach ie to full 3/4 + 7/8 measurements before rorc penalise the area. The foot is as max as the standard boom length allows. The P measurement we are slightly increasing as there is room in the mast to allow for it and adding a backstay batten to the crane. The tack of the main we have ground off the standard z spars tack point and shackle direct to the gooseneck (stronger and more non penalty area. Genoa we reckon anything bigger than 145% just back winds the main too quickly. 140% is a good overlap if you are looking to reduce the rating without stalling the performance in light airs. We hold onto the number 1 depending on the course + sea state until around 20knots before changing down to no3... The kite area sizes we have tried are 41mtr sq too small in the light stuff. 46 mtr sq very good all round size and 50 great especially when blowing. We dont bother with A sails at the moment as we mainly race short course around the cans, but maybe watch this space. Any kite bigger than 50 mtr sq is penalised on rating and we believe the performance gain is not worth the rating hit.

the spinny they had on banana man for sail east was
massive compared to yours oli! must have been a 46-50? they were going like a train aswell. they were overtaking sigma 38s like they were standing still!. even gave oystercatcher a run for their money. |

I have done the last 6 years in sportsboat class at scottish series, recently we have been split into 2 classes, fast and slow, corks and melges in fast and anything from sonars to ben 25's in slow The Projection would be in the slow class, the course will be windward lee ward, has been every year for as long as i remember so you should do ok, if you went IRC i think you would be class 4, lots of big rigs to get shadowed from on the line

Thanks for your replies, I'm grateful... I've got a number of kites, mostly around the 45-46sqm, smallest 42sqm (Oli, 38 is tiny!) which we used when it was howling two weekends ago. Our newest kite is 45 I think, so that would be ok? I don't think I have heard of anyone using bigger than 50. We've all but destroyed our number 3, so I'm going to have to buy a new one. I have a new Hyde 150% genoa and a smaller Pentex Goacher (I have never bothered to measure the foot to check the %) with a very high clew, not a great sail but it might fit the bill. Detente you may well be right about genoa size, but the budget is limited. I still have a Pentex Goacher main but I'd like to replace it because it tends to pull out of the track, hence the request for advice... Detente you mentioned 'full 3/4 + 7/8 measurements', do you know what these are or is this what your sailmaker told you? Are you saying you can use a larger roach but there's a point when you're likely to be penalised? I can't see that attaching the tack direct to the gooseneck is going to give anything more than a few extra square inches. I'll be doing a P measurement anyway, but I can't believe that this hasn't already been exploited to the full by whoever designs the sails. Risky B, thanks for your advice about Scottish series. What is 'Risky Business' out of curiosity? Chic |

I've been watching this thread with interest ... we got new main and no.1 this season , from a local sailmaker , who sails with us now and then , he made them as large as he could from our measurement cert , the Hydes were a little small in areas , the head goes up about another 6 inches on what it did , we have a batten on top of mast to help with backstay . The genoa is also a little taller . we are now really competitive most of the time , often beating most of the 1720's over the water and close to melges . Ben 25 can still be a prob at times , however they seem to break easily. Downwind is our problem area , not too bad on a dead run but if its a reaching leg the melges and 1720's can leave us dead . we have a 45 m A sail but we need more wind to make it viable we find ,the sym kite works pretty well all round .We got a 3rd overall in our last SB regatta , loosing only to melges , we did beat them both in individual races over the weekend however so were pretty happy . wind was from very light to about 18 knots over the weekend . Our new sails def moved us up a league , they are made from that newish v light see thro stuff with carbon and kevlar strands, about half the weight of the not very old hydes we were using , not exactly cheap tho , but worth it I feel and am told to expect 3 good seasons at least from them as they should not stretch easily ... we shall see . Our newish hyde 45 m kite has had a hard season and is well patched now , will poss go for a larger one next time after what I've read here , we have no probs upwind now except for my helming I believe , can't imagine using a 38m kite ... have used our 40 a couple of times and that seems pretty slow ... unless its really blowing , Doug . filthy gorgeous 7632
