Might this be because of Hyde's amazing winter deal on racing sails, Garth? I'm going to have to scrape together some cash for it too...

Yes it is a good offer, but not unusual for this time of year - 20-25% discounts. I also have a very good quote from Quantum Sails. |

Hi Folks I've been watching your forum with interest for a while. I bought Nemo in July and have been keeping quiet and sailing hard ever since! Previously sailed X332, beneteau 34.7 and half tonner Chia Chia. The boats an absoloute dream and I honestly couldnt be happier. Based in Liverpool but will be doing Irish sea circuit - Holyhead, Isle of Man, Abersoch, Pwllhelli. Also maybe trip to Dunlaoghrie or Kinsale. (some trailering between events, I may add). I reccommend having a look at Goacher sails as well. All the boats I know that have them are successful. I have a new No1 and a price list for full set! We havent had any decent breeze here yet but have had success in the light stuff. Whos done any decent miles in 762's?? How do they handle a sea? When we've got this one sussed we will be interested in coming to an event to race other 762's Regards Andy Farrell

Welcome Andy, Good to hear that you are delighted with Nemo. As far as sails are concerned, I agree that Goacher also comes highly recommended. We did one offshore race last year. Falmouth around Eddystone (off Plymouth) into Fowey - about 44 miles which was good, only beaten by X yachts 41. On the way back we encountered a decent headwind, up to 25 knots, and a bit of sea and I would say that P762s cope very well for a 25 footer. Our sailing club has its 50th Anniversary of its Cross-Channel race (90 miles) next year and I think we will give it a go, provided the wind is in the right direction. Look forward to hearing from you further.

Hi Andy, i havent done too many offshore miles in PROPER JOB yet but doing delivery trips 2 up in 20+knts on the east coast is fun, especially downhill! all the time the 762 behaved itself. Been out in 2+ metre seas and 40knts with full crew, hairy but again well mannered. just expect to get wet. oli |

Hallo Andy, wondered where Nemo had gone to! We're not allowed to race offshore in the Projection on the Forth - it doesn't quite comply with the local regulations, but I can vouch for the boat's seaworthyness. We raced yesterday with a constant 30+ knots and a very steep 1.5-2m chop.. Both boat and crew took a pounding, but we had the kite up anyway (the smallest one!) and acheived over 14.5knots almost dead downwind. It would've been a lot faster if we'd had flatter water. Racing was abandoned after that with rising winds and we hit 11knots on our way back to the harbour under reefed main alone! But you're going to get very, very wet. The lack of freeboard means that you often go through waves rather than over them, and consequently the crew quickly get very tired.

Sods law eh? Out on sunday - close to 40 knots (within an hour of very light infuriating airs). Caught in squall just as we finished. The outboard wasnt up to it so we put headsail up and were fine. Very narrow lock entrance at liverpool and with a 5knot tide was interesting. Boat was fine though. We run a 4hp outboard due to tides here and are normally ok. With the headsail up we had no problems. See what you mean about the wetness though! No hollywood speeds. We seem to get about 6.4 uphill and I've only had 10 downhill, but not had her out in a decent breeze - Sunday was horrible 110 degree shifts and gusting. |

Hi All We had a cracking sail on saturday on Pink fizz, It was not too windy gusting around 20 -25 knots but steady at around 15. The race was one of our frostbite races... Being a pursuit we had to give about a 2 day head start to a contessa 26... however having the full five crew we opted for full sail area due to it being a pre set course the wind involved lots of reaching and fetching. Due to this we opted to choke the kite halyard back to standard hoist and use the small 40 sqmtr kite. As our owner always likes calling for kite hoists it was up for a high percentage of the race and on some fairly tight reaches had 16 knts shouting from the tacktick. The conditions go up and we were a little overpowered around 20knt true with the number 1 up. At what point to people change down head sail size???.... Still we battled on with the final beat home being a windy one, just after finishing the backstay parted company from the crane just as we were sailing back to the mooring...!!! Time for a new backstay me thinks with only a couple more races left this year. |

Yes, I think it would be prudent for us to drop the mast soon and check -
we've had some very breezy sailing this year. I can hardly remember the last time we used a number 1 and the number 3 is almost dead from overuse... I still find tight kite reaches difficult; even with 5 crew on the stern quarter it's a struggle to keep the rudder in the water. We 've been changing down headsails at about 16knots with good results, keeping the main powered up for more of the time means no loss in boat speed and we point higher with the 3 as well. Just depends on the depth of the lulls!! F word - 6.4 upwind sounds about right, although you can sometimes squeeze a little more if conditions are flat. As for downwind most of the time planing means about 10-11 knots - it's only a matter of time before you get the big gust! |
