I have sailed a 14 a few times and know how little bouyancy is in the bows - it is like sailing on two ice scates, so please let me know how you get on with a kite!!!    It could be very wet!!!

The hobie 14 has an eliptical section and I believe the hobie 14 masts are effectively cut down versions of the 16 mast.  Same shape, wall thickness, only real difference being in mast height
In short, a hobie 14 mast could happily take the addition of a spinniker without needing any additional re-enforcement.
On the subject of the addition of the spinnker to a catapult, I havnt seen one up close, nor raced one, thus why I didnt comment on that particular part.

guys from memory and i am open to be corrected here doesnt the catapult and i think the unicorn use round section masts as apposed to the usual large wing section used on most cats could explain why beefing up was required ?

bit like the 5.9 and the likes have diamonds but the hobies dont have you ever compared the weight my h17 mast weighed a lot more than my 5.9 mast thickness of metal i presume .

so the kid could be right?

Lets not be too harsh on the kid.  The way i see it, he's got PLENTY of scope for learning and thats never a bad thing.
Its the comment in choosing a boat section where feva-sailor has stated that the RS500 has a more effecient hull shape and is quicker than the 29er that worries me.
