Hi people, i have just purchased a rs600. just a question on the rig setup. there seems to be alot of rake on the mast before the sail is even on, it doesnt sit flush on the mouting on the deck. could this be down to the shrouds being to short or are they all like this? if anyone has any pictures side on showing there mast and step would be much appreciated. |

Hi The mast will be raked until you tighten the forestay. It also doesnt sit neatly on thre step. It should not be hugely raked once you've got lots of forestay tension on - nothing like a Contender. Go onto the RS Web site and look at the Tuning section for the 600 - lots of useful docs to print off. - http://www.rs-association.com/
Good luck

I recently got a 2m Harrison extension from P&B for £75. It's the business and has taken a lot more abuse then the crap Holt one (I think they only get crap over a certain length - mine was 2.1m) I broke last season. Incidentaly I made a Streaker and Oppy sailor quite happy when I presented each of them with a 'new' carbon tiller extension. I guess if you're lucky with where it broke you could sell both ends and recoup some of the replacement cost? Edited by Matt Jackson |

For a 600, thats some EXTREME rig tension!! When i first got mine i talked to some of the old skool 600 guys and their general rule of thumb seemed to be "floppy is fast", the idea being you should set it to you weight so that as you put your weight on the wire the windward shroud should just go floppy. On a loose gauge i doubt im evening hitting 20 (im quite light ya see). hhmmmmm i think i may try some extreme tension and see what it feels like, could well be that ive been sailing with a horrible shaped rig! Any chance of you going to the 600 open at weymouth 1st wknd of june?? would be nice to race against some other Y&Y forum members! Doug Edited by Doug.H |

[QUOTE=turnturtle] You don't want it too tight, just enough to keep the rig in the boat, so as Doug said, with your weight on the wire the windward shroud should be slightly slack. Any tighter and you will stop the mast rotating and downwind you won't be able to get the boom out. The only time you want it super-tight is in strong winds and big waves, when the whole thing is crashing around and you need to ensure the mast doesn't suddenly pop off it's support! cheers Jamie |

There is a guy sailing a 600 seriously fast at our sailing club at the moment and he seems to sail with quite alot of tension. We do sail on the sea tho and get big waves alot. My dad sails a contender (well as of tomorrow a MPS) but he said Danny was the first 600 sailor to leave him upwind so he must be doing summin right.
Il take a loose gauge tomorrow and whack it on his shroud. Edited by Calum_Reid |
