Having sailed Skiffs and then most two up cats I ended up buying a Shadow at the end of last season. This is without doubt one of the finest dinghies ever designed. Its a bit like climbing off a pony and onto a skittish and somewhat manic race horse. Faaaaannntttaaassstiiicccccc.

If that's a suitable simile, then an F16 in uni-rig setup (compare like with like  ) is an out and out pure-bred stallion! Smooth, strong and incredibly fast!

Have fun with your Shadow, Mike, and welcome to the sensible side of sailing! You won't ever regret making that step.

Far too old to still be doing this......

Shadow =  95Kgs  SCHRS 1.07 (personally, I think it should be nearer 1.05)

F16 Uni = 104Kgs  SCHRS 0.98 (personally, I think it should be 1.01)

FX1 Uni = 135Kgs  SCHRS 1.04 (this is about right)

Why on earth would anyone want a heavy boat that's also quite slow?

Oh, PS:      F18 = 180Kgs   SCHRS 1.01  (BUT it is a pure 2 man boat)

                   F16 = 107Kgs   SCHRS 1.01  (in 2 man sloop mode)

the fx1s can beat a cirrus in light winds without its handycap. the spi are so much bigger and eaiser to use than the shadows.an fx 1 beat a vry good sailor on his shadow out here too.

Why are you saying a Cirrus and not F18s in general?  It is possible Fx's are faster in (very) light winds due to weight etc, but it would depend on who is on board!!

I'd have thought the Cat world was small enough without trying to score points off each other? Any of these boats will be fun and fast if you are lucky enough (or have moved specially!) to live by a piece of water big enough to allow them free rein. The last Cat I raced was a Dart 18 in Falmouth in about 1991, and that was fast enough to be able to criuse down the reach in 20 knots of wind infront of a 14 going full pelt. The new generation must be something else again - support each other!
