wow i have just looked at the laser spares site and the price of a 4k main has gone up from £750 to 772,  jib £335 to 345,  spinni £640 to 659

now that isnt just a little increase it is massive they are over priced anyway.  talk about pulling my pants down and  me.  it is just mad.    its not even like the sails have got better.

Here lies the danger for some of the older smods when it becomes cheaper to buy a 2nd hand boat and break it for spares rather than buy new parts!

Why is that so shocking a price rise ?

It is about 3%.  Would not have a problem with that given the current rate of inflation.

What happens is that eventually someone comes up with "training sails" at 2/3 the price for people to use in club racing, as has happened with Laser 1 and Topper sails. Don't know how good they are....

The other option is to allow competition, which is fine if you have a stable design, as in the Solo, but if there is still development (Phantoms?) you can have an (expensive) arms race.

'Course, Laser want to keep the profits in house.

All in all, it's another example of why SMOD's aren't always a good thing!

I can confirm the Laser 1 training sails are good and of good quality. We have a number of people who use them for c;ub racing (we have bent the class rules a bit). One of the aims of the club I am in is to keep sailing affordable, allowing the use of non-standard sails is one of the best ways of doing it. Of course for Opens everyone has to use a genuine class legal sail.

(One of the other reasons for changing class - Laser 1 mainsail around £400 for a bedsheet, Blaze mainsail around £450 for a good quality laminate sail....enough said).

As for there being an arms race in Phantoms I disagree, you always get that with multiple sail makers in a class and they tend to rotate round, just the benefit of having several sailmakers, you do get a choice when you buy (and the sails are continually developed).

Also most sailmakers reduce their prices in winter, laser never really do this with their sails.

Laser really do try to screw every last penny out of us. I mean it cant cost that much to make them?
A set of sails for an 800 is cheaper, and by cheaper i mean 224 quid cheaper FOR BIGGER AND BETTER SAILS! I mean 1779 quid for 3 sails is really taking the buiscit. Come on laser sort your life out.
