Less than 48 hours into leg 2, 2 boats down already.  It's not good for sailing really is it?

Well it is meant to be the toughest yacht race in the world. Do people think any of the boats are going to manage to sail every leg without returning to shore with a breakage at some point?

There have always been boats that get damaged but I don't remember anything on this scale before. The scary thing is that they haven't encountered any really tough conditions yet - but they will, and soon.

Just take a look at the videos of the inshore race on the the VOR website.  There's a bit of breeze blowing and  the speeds they get are unbelievable.  The scary thing is that the ultra-professional crews on the boats can hardly cope and the boats are frquently out of control with broaches and twisted spinnakers.  An article also described the alarming problem of psychological stress on the sailors.  This is something pretty new in the world of sailing and the safety of it has to be questioned.

What a race/class ... I hope they all make it through the SO ...

Rick

PS. I guess Volvo are looking to sex up the brand a bit ... reliability and safe it isn't ...

You think broaches, twisted spinnakers and white knuckles on the wheel are a new thing? I assume you don't remember IOR designs.
