These things really aren't as difficult as you might think. Without wanting to take anything away from Tim's efforts, the basics of epoxy/carbon boatbuilding are really pretty straightforward. With experience what you mainly gain is neatness, lower weight and less time to do it. You can spot a Bloodaxe built boat Cherub, for instance, by the way the fabric is all neatly aligned and smooth, the fillets are all eaxctly consistent in size, smooth and even and all the rest of it. A home built boat won't be like that, fillets may be rough, the fabric a bit wavey, all the rest of it, but provided that everything is basically in the right place it will still work. OK it will be heavier, and it will end up using loads more filler in fairing it and getting it smooth, but there's not really the same huge difference that there was between a Bloodaxe built wood Cherub and some of the ropier homebuilds which have headed for that great bonfire in the sky... |

It is very true, as with all these things practise makes perfect. Since
discovering peel ply everything has become so much easier! It helped
with this conversion that I had help from Mr Cunningham so he knows his
stuff more than the average. Next step... new boat. That should test my
building skills as long as my money making skills allow it!

Holy cr*p Tim that looks pretty serious!!! That also means that I now have the shortest Cherub in the fleet...mine turned out to be a fair few inches under 12' too. Less wetted area, that's what I say!!! Edited by Iain C |

Looks good Tim. Peel ply is indeed the answer to so many questions of a gluey nature.

i can assure you that it is 3698mm long as we measured it enough times
as we went along! would have liked to have had those extra 2mm but i
was a bit fed up of sanding by 3am to be bothered to add another bit of
bog before laminating!
