Thanks Guys, nice to know that I am welcome. For the record my previous boats have been a J92 named J'Ronimo then a new J80 named Jouster and now the Projection 920 Sleeper.

Here is a picture of Sleeper taken shortly after she arrived in Cardiff in August 2007.You will note the modified keel, cast iron with a lead shoe. All 4 Projection 920's were fitted with this modified keel to reduce the boats rating. This made the boats more competative under CHS handicap, now IRC. Originally they were all fitted with a lead keel of the same profile fitted to the 762.

Regards

Alan

A close up of Sleepers 2.2 metre keel and there's a fare chunk of lead bolted on the bottom!

Hi Sleeper,

Very interested in the keel.  We race P762s with some success in Cornwall - Falmouth & Helford River.  I posted an earlier thread about adding 100kgs to the keel of a P762 to try and get our standard optmised rating down to between 0.955 and 0.960.  I think this might be the way to go and then race 4 up, but haven't run a trial certificate yet to see what numbers would come out.  Do you know how much your 920 was reduced by?

We have pretty good results under IRC (www.helfordriversc.co.uk). especially in very light and strong breezes, but do suffer in the 5-12 knot zone, especially against J109 and new Corby 29.

I would be interested in what other thought of this idea.

Hello Garth,

Sleeper was launched in 1998 at that time she was named "No Compromise" rather liked the name, she was renamed by the second owner who owned a business and guess what they manufactured? yes railway sleepers! hence the present name.

All four 920's were launched with CHS endorsed certificates rating 1.023, the keels were removed and replaced within the first year of the boats being launched with the keel pictured above to optimise the rating, the handicap was re-rated at 1.011

When we purchased the boat during August 2007 Sleeper rated 0.999 with a 54 Sq metre spinnaker, I have since purchased a larger spinnaker at 60 Sq metres which increased this years rating to 1.001

The 6 Sq metre (10%) increase has helped, however if I knew then what I know now I would have gone for an even bigger kite. My sailmaker advised me not go any larger as he felt that I would be hammered on handicap, I think he was wrong, through reading through this forum it is obvious that IRC does not penalize heavily on spinnaker size!

The 920 is a very simular animal to the 762 I feel, close winded and a delight to sail especially upwind, we do extremely well in a breeze upwind as does the 762, however likewise we suffer downwind in light airs,  perhaps in the future I will purchase an even larger spinnaker with a larger pole.

We have raced mostly in light airs since purchasing Sleeper, however when we have experienced the bigger breeze we have performed extremely well, 14 knots downwind with a reefed main in 25 knots of breeze! this being during a regatta where we scored 3 bullets against boats such as J109's Beneteau 34.7's etc

Sleeper,

Many thanks for the info - 2 IRC points for 10% increase in kite area sounds great value.  We have optimised our P762 by reducing to a 140% #1, reducing kite from 49sqm to 46sqm, but by putting the hoist 600mm up the mast, this has enhanced our downwind performance - we now rate 0.966, down from 0.969.

Have you thought about raising your hoist to get enhanced performance from a smaller kite, but fitting a choker for windy conditions.  The P920 is a very pretty boat and it's nice to see you doing so well against good IRC boats, I will keep my eye out for any coming onto the market as it would be a nice upgrade in before too long.

It would be really helpful if you could estimate know how much additional weight was added in changing the keel.  If we could add a pro-rata'd weight to reduce IRC down to say 0.956, I think a P762 would give any small IRC boat (eg Corby 25) a serious run for its money, but I guess it could be challenging to keep the nose out in a real blow.

Hello Garth,

The 10% increase by my calculations infact cost us 5 IRC points. Sleeper's IRC rating of 0.999 was for 2007 and currently 1.001 for 2008

I would have expected the 2007 rating to have dropped by roughly 3 points for this year to 0.996 if we had not increased the spinnaker size in February.

Your suggestion of increasing the spinnaker hoist is interesting, I will be looking at this in detail, we are unstepping the mast during the later part of July, so this would be the ideal  time to add another sheave if required.

In answer to your questing regarding Sleeper's weight, with her original keel she weighed 2640 Kg her present weight with the modified keel is 2860 Kg, draught is 1.98 metres and not the 2.2 metres that I originally quoted, sorry for that.

If you want to get together with other Projection 762s, you could do a lot worse than come to the Haven Ports Yacht Club Autumn Series on September 21st, October 5th (2 races for IRC), 12th, 19th, and 26th.

HPYC is located at Levington on the River Orwell, close to Ipswich.  Our racing starts and finishes in the river and then goes out to sea.  We attract a very competitive IRC fleet averaging around 16 starters, with two Projection 762s regularly racing; it is hard to find spring and autumn racing of this calibre in many places outside of the Solent.  Berthing should be available at Suffolk Yacht Harbour.

Full details on www.hpyc.com

Cheers

Rob

Hi Garth,

I have bought in Walles the Projection 762 " Queen of the Slipstream" since 3 years who is now "SENSATION". It's a pleasure for me to discover Projection conversations as we are only two owners in France...
I am sailing with her in St Malo and racing solo or two handed mostly. I am very interested regarding what your are saying about the IRC rating.
This year my IRC is 0.973 with a big kite (58spm) wich is for my opinion indispensable to reach similar speed downwind with J80 or J92. So let me know your own experience with your small kite. I don't understand how do you do to get such good results with it!
