Tim,

IRC of 0.962 is pretty low, do you know their kite size and HSA?

Garth

Moving from 38sqm to 46 sqm will transformed the boat and you will be much more competitive for a relatively small hit on IRC - a trial cert. perhaps?

Hi Garth

I don't know their details I'm afraid. I'll have to ask them....

hi,
i want to raise the halyard for the kite by the recommended 600mm. of those boats who have made the mod. whats needed and how is the choker set up.
my kite situation isnt great either as im still using the original 50.88 sqm kite. any 45/46 mt kites in decent shape out there? let me know. rating last year was 979 irc it is tough when a you give a sj320 a minute every 100, definitely need to optimise.

Hi Guys ,

Last season in light airs we were really struggling  badly , could not get near any of the compettition , this year with a new No.1 we are really doing much better.

We managed a 3rd in a fleet of 16 mainly sports boats  the other weekend, beating all the corks and a couple of Melges , only beaten by 2 Melges . I was really surprised in the differance . We also won our first race last night in light stuff , no Melges out to play though . We now seem quite quick .... The genoa is made from a new contender material , see through , about half the weight of the old Hyde.  its pretty useful in stronger winds also , our kite is 45m , we are still playing with the assy ... will start using it in races soon I think ... if only I could get a consistent crew !  would you believe they have other interests !

Doug .

Hi JH,

We raised the halyard this season and fitted a choker - it makes a massive difference downwind in light airs.  You will need a halyard sheave/block for a 6mm halyard and we used a 4mm piece of stripped spectra for the choker, which runs through the old halyard block.  We have a small block attached to the chocker line, which the new halyard runs through and it is held in position by a piece of shock cord - seems to work well.

Our IRC is now down to 0.966 which is pretty much optimised for P762 with 140% genoa and 46sqm kite. I do have a good condition 48sqm all purpose kite (Hyde) which would be good for club racing and would only cost 1-2 IRC points compared with 45/46sqm kite.  To improve your IRC you may also want to consider weighing the boat and reducing #1 genoa to 135% - 140% if you want to down to get down to 0.965.

Hope this helps

Garth

I'm curious to understand the rush to raise the spinnaker halyard height, because I just don't see it... I think we've done enough close quarters racing against Pink Gin (the first P762 to raise the halyard height) to believe that it doesn't make any difference at all in light winds. I accept that Duncan and crew have only raced her since the beginning of the season but they are a good crew, and we had already forgotten that the two boats downwind are using different setups, so close are we on boat speed. I don't think there is anything really in it. In my opinion how much hull there is in the water makes the biggest difference of all and that will cost you nothing!

However I am gradually coming round to the idea that a 135 or 140 percent genoa might be a good idea. I'm going to start saving...

Maybe you go as fast as pink gin with her higher hoist because your spinaker trimer and tactition is a rockstar...

Maybe Not?
