Tim,

How big is the kite, what weight are you and what is the size of your #1.

Reducing our spinnaker to 46sqm and re-measuring the sails has brought us down to 0.966.  To compensate for reduction in kite size we have pushed the halyard 600mm higher up the mast - this worked very well for Pink Gin last year and we have also fitted a choker from old halyard point for when it is blowing.

Thanks Tim,

I think you will notice a big difference downwind with the bigger kite.  Should make you more comptetive under IRC in medium wind conditions.  We are a bit heavier and smaller #1.

I hope so! Sailmaker thinks so too.

I'm looking forward to finding out anyway (first race on sunday). We've
always found downwind the hardest work in light airs so this should
improve things

I reckon its about .001 point per 2sqm of kite area.  At 38sqm your kite seems well underpowered, our IRC numbers are: 0.966 with 46 sqm kite and 0.948 without - no correlation with your figures I am afraid.

Probably the best way to optimise a P762 is to get the boat weighed, use 130-140% genoa and 46-48sqm kite with a raised halyard position.

hi garth,

thanks for the reply.  Thats what im trying to find out, i know spinnakers dont mean much in irc and the fact that your spinnaker is alot bigger and you have the same handicap goes some way to shows that.

our factor is 2.92m2 per point and yours is 2.55

im liking the idea of a raised haylard more and more, but would need a larger kite to accomplish that.

We're still not planning any IRC races this season so haven't applied for a certificate.

38sqm is the size of our smallest kite - there's a big difference in performance using a bigger one!

Garth, if Duncan isn't interested in your kite could you pm me with details of condition etc of your spare kite?? We completely trashed our club racing kite during the first race of the season..

We are 0.972 with a 45sqm kite, 0.955 without

The other projectin at our club rates 0.962 so we're giving them planty of time.

Had our first race on sunday (in the snow) and the bigger kite is a massive improvement.

so thats 2.92, 2.55, and 2.64 with an average of 2.70.  so if we had a new kite of 46m2 it would roughly be a hit of 3 points.  interesting....
