Yeah, Bl%^£y rudder stock broke, very nice trying to land in a reasonable surf and offshore wind without a rudder, and it was the first time I had sailed the thing.

BWD, sounds like your first sail in a contender was as bad as mine (the b****y thing nearly killed me). though i can just about sail it now.
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

that must have been annoying especially as it was the first time uve been out in the thing .  stuff like that really annoys me when it happens  because it can also be very scary at times!

Not scared, just wondered why it felt so different trapezing on starboard tack, until I looked back and saw the rudder at a jaunty little angle.  But all was not lost, chatting to the crew of the rescue boat who were towing me back towards the shore, it appeares that she needs a bit of carpentry work done in her roof.
