It is what it is. An entry level budget boat which has a wide variety of rigs in an effort to fulfil many roles. It probably does that as well as might be expected, but bearing in mind its notorious that there are no boats that are great singlehanders and great two handers, it would be foolish to expect it to be able to be even close to a boat designed for a particular role.

To be fair, 20 years ago it had a hellish yardstick - I seem to remember being expected to keep up with Solos. Might have gone a bit the other way but I suspect it would still lag far behind in a breeze.

Topaz is an odd but interesting boat, club has a single sail one and in a blow it is far far nicer than a Laser to sail. Much more comfortable. Less leg ache and the boom is higher.Kids all love it.

However it is really a two person boat. It has a lot of volume behind the mast step to support the second person. This means that single handed it is always bow up and slams. The only way to get the bow down and the stern out of the water upwind or in light winds is to hike over the dagger board.The front toe straps don't work for this, you need a very long extension and you are forward of the main so tacking is difficult.

The boom on ours was not strong enough for the centre main and has bent.

Caution, remember the Wayfarer SD. They had a rep. for being swines if capsized in anything but flat water; came up with some water aboard and due to the free surface water effect they were inclined to roll straight back over.

There’s loads of air shows all over the country. If the dinghy show relates to  airshows when are Southport and Sunderland.

Went to Sunderland a few years ago, used the park and ride, what a nightmare, arrivals were spread over a couple of hours, when show ended everyone went to the pick up points, gave up after a couple of hours and got a cab to the car.
