This year looking a lot better, we could be back to normal. Going to be looking for a single hander, probably a 'Solo' or a 'Laser', sold all mine last year. Hoping to do a series of opens, with camping nearby and a good pub with food, hopefully a couple of pubs, shop and a cafe, fingers crossed for sunny weather and brisk winds, good company. Happy New year.

Thought you were a fellow 'proper'weight, 67-72kg, better get a Streaker. Better still get a D0. HNY back

That’s Radial county, fraction of the price and less depreciation.

Been offered a full spec Topaz, raceX sail, two handed sails with stayed mast, never sailed one, owner said it is a modern fast Skiff.

Forgot to say its got a spinnaker too, he uses it with the raceX sail, easily beats the Lasers and Aeroes at his club, must be fairly competent if he can solo and use a spinney.

But you won’t find any opens it even class racing. You’d be better with a Laser (Masters circuit) or Solo if you want to go to events.
Or a 100 obvs

Topaz Race X might be "fun" in a blow, but from what I have seen of them, they are beyond s***e in the light stuff.

Comet Zero. Sailed a Club one once before I got my Laser moved up to new Club, felt short and very rolly; once was enough, Laser felt a lot more together.

What is problem with Topaz?
Weight?
Rotomould snobbery?
Poor Hull shape?

You will never get anyone here to be positive about roto moulded boat. They have there good points, maintenance free and robust. To call it a modern skiff is a stretch, unofficially PY 1170 so you are well behind the solos and even further behind Lasers. It does have a roomy cockpit for its type and has a degree of flexibility it terms of rig etc. Covid has completely messed up the second hand market, good boats are hard to get and top $$$ and once things normalise deprecation might be eye watering. It 100% depends on what sort of sailing you want to do, how much he is asking, state of boat etc etc. But if he wants £1500 for it you keep it for a year and sell it for £1000 it’s only cost £42 a month a little over two pints a week down here, ignoring club fees etc. sums change if you need to buy new sails.

All of the above. Mind, the asymmetric raceX is the best rig of a bad lot.

Comet Zero is the miniature doublehanded boat with jib, looking like a very scaled down Trio. Nothing like a Laser.

It's not bad, a decent boat for lightweight beginners, and an absolute hoot with two 'normal' adults for a quick blast in F6+ but it's also quite cramped for grown ups and only performs 'adequately'. They used to be cheap but there're lots of other boats I'd rather spend £1500 on, just for starters a Solo or Laser if you sail on a lake or an old Blaze if your local spot is open water.

The thing with Rotomoulds is they have their place.
But discussing their virtues on here is a bit like posting on a car enthusiasts forum that you've just bought a Kia Picanto. Both have the same basic stuff that the members get excited about but aren't really what the audience are into

The Comet (and its association) predates the other Comet classes by quite some margin. I owned 190 back 20 years ago or so, and had good fun. Much shorter than a Laser, and a tendency to death roll in much breeze (I did, anyway) but a nice little boat.

Comet is a nice little singlehander ( I have a half share in Comet 838 with mrs grumpycat ) but it is two faced to sail . In light to mid wind it’s fairly vice free but when the wind gets up the combination of being wide and short and the rounded hull shape means the boat will put you in down wind very easily Especially when it’s got it’s original rig and with rear sheeting . There is now the option of another rig called the XTRA . This has a slightly shorter mast with a more efficient, slightly smaller sail , this makes the boat a lot easier to sail in strong winds but it is very slightly slower very light winds . You pay your money and take your choice as they sail off the same handicap . Other snippets of info , it has a soft py ( if the sailor is good enough to cope with its down wind behaviour) , it’s build quality is good , they are good value for the money and if you prefer centre sheeting the manufacturer sell conversion kits .

It is what it is. An entry level budget boat which has a wide variety of rigs in an effort to fulfil many roles. It probably does that as well as might be expected, but bearing in mind its notorious that there are no boats that are great singlehanders and great two handers, it would be foolish to expect it to be able to be even close to a boat designed for a particular role.

To be fair, 20 years ago it had a hellish yardstick - I seem to remember being expected to keep up with Solos. Might have gone a bit the other way but I suspect it would still lag far behind in a breeze.

Topaz is an odd but interesting boat, club has a single sail one and in a blow it is far far nicer than a Laser to sail. Much more comfortable. Less leg ache and the boom is higher.Kids all love it.
However it is really a two person boat. It has a lot of volume behind the mast step to support the second person. This means that single handed it is always bow up and slams. The only way to get the bow down and the stern out of the water upwind or in light winds is to hike over the dagger board. The front toe straps don't work for this, you need a very long extension and you are forward of the main so tacking is difficult.
The boom on ours was not strong enough for the centre main and has bent.

423. Caution, remember the Wayfarer SD. They had a rep. for being swines if capsized in anything but flat water; came up with some water aboard and due to the free surface water effect they were inclined to roll straight back over.

There’s loads of air shows all over the country. If the dinghy show relates to airshows when are Southport and Sunderland.

Went to Sunderland a few years ago, used the park and ride, what a nightmare, arrivals were spread over a couple of hours, when show ended everyone went to the pick up points, gave up after a couple of hours and got a cab to the car.

Think the slope of the floor is quite steep, goes from nothing at stern, water sheds straight out. Wayfarer would be a bit of a weeble with gallons of water free running.

If you mean the Ford Escort, it's probably an 1100cc with a bad exhaust and some tacky panel work. If you're talking about the dinghy, I must have mistaken it for a wheelie bin. Marketing themes from the last century.....
