In my time sailing . I have sailed class racing , py handicap, py pursuits, personal handicaps based on time sailed ( people cheat , when they win they win by seconds, when they are having a bad race they are last by minutes) and personal handicap based on race positions .
Personally py pursuits are my favourite by far , with personal handicap based on race positions coming in second . And yes , certain sailors at my club don’t like the second race type because when their handicap has go out a lot way it means cannot win . But on the other hand it makes them realise how 95% of people in a club race feel ever week, so I don’t feel sorry for them because they feel like this for a couple of races in a series.  Smile

TBH I just enjoy racing and at one club I win quite often, at the other I'm lucky to get out of the bottom third but I enjoy both equally. I think the reason is that nobody at either club takes it too seriously (ok there are a couple at the 'fast' club who get pretty intense on the water but it doesn't carry over into the boat park).

And how you think you're going to design something that works better than what we currently have (foiling excepted)around that relatively crude formula I don't know, and hell if you do then great if it's easy enough to sail I'll buy one, but what we really don't need is more of the same ole same ole, because it's taking us nowhere fast.

In a sense, they don't. Most of the rules only had to deal with displacement craft, so didn't have the added complexity of planing.

And a boat designed to win doesn't have to be nice to sail, or fast. It just has to be making the most of distorting the rule set to make it faster than the spreadsheet thinks it ought to be.

But I'm obviously just blindly following the status quo and have never looked into any of this, so ignore me and carry on with your wonder handicap project. I'll look on with amazement.
