Why don’t you get HISC to host it Mozzy? Get on the club committee and arrange it.

I don't hold anything against Exe. They're trying to make the best decisions from their perspective and are acting in good faith. It's their club and their decision.
But, it doesn't mean I can't have a different view.
I think sport and outdoors activity should be top priority. The biggest actionable risk factors are vitamin D and your weight / fitness. Not much one can do about age, underlying health conditions, sex or ethnicity. If people can get active and pump some money in to the economy then that, for me, outweighs the risks of transmission (which are present everywhere). I feel events like these should be prioritised over meal deals and relaxing of the 2m rule to fit more people in boozers. |

Exe have an excellent reputation for hospitality and event management. The fact that they “don’t want you as a guest” this year is hardly something you should hold against them in these circumstances.

That’s right, the people with a financial interest in the tourist industry would be very small. In Cornwall tourism accounts for about 25% of the economy, the people that make their living from it are often seasonal workers who are only here during the summer. The actual owners of the businesses would be a tiny percentage, as most of them don’t live in the area.

Two weeks ago my view was that my local area had a low infection rate and confidence and general situation was improving.
A pub in town had a very busy weekend with little social distancing. This started a spike in Covid , a town car park turned into a Covid testing station and most of the pubs in town closing. Events need to be planned weeks ahead. The local situation can change in days at the moment. Edited by ian.r.mcdonald - 05 Aug 20 at 8:47am |

The 'only' folk? You make it sound like they are a minority.
Well, as it stands about 20k of accommodation has been cancelled in Exe. That accommodation wouldn't have been filled with those normally in marbella. It would have been filled with sailors who spend the majority of their day on the water. With any luck some of that accommodation will now be filled by the Benidorm crowd picking up a cheap deal. I get that people are scared. But I don't see how some of these decisions help the virus situation and are just harmful to the economy and peoples quality of life. I won't be too put out if the nationals don't go ahead. I'm lucky to sail at a great club with lots of 800s and 200s there to race against. I always knew this was possibility. And I certainly don't want to go somewhere where I am not wanted as a guest.

I think the only folk in Devon & Cornwall who want tourists down at the moment are those with a financial interest in the tourist industry. Most locals in Cornwall would rather people stayed away until next year. As it is, we’ve got the “people” who would normally be in Marbella & Benidorm down here. In general they aren’t social distancing, wearing masks, etc., and when challenged their response is along the lines of “we’ve come here to get away from all of that”.
So don’t be surprised if you have plans for Devon and Cornwall that don’t go as expected, average people here think it’s still too early.

Well the 800's have thirty boats pre-entered, mostly pre-paid. Looking at the entrants about 80-90% were under 35. The 700s as well have a good pre-entry, already up on last year with a month to go.
RYA had given the nod to double handed sailing. DCMS are being very support back to sport plans. The club had volunteers sorted by their event team. Yet, the Exe Club Committee pulled the plug just yesterday and now the class is looking to relocate. At the end of the day, if a club doesn't want you there, then that's all there is to it. But, I get the feeling that a few events being lost now aren't down to restrictions, or lack of volunteers, or lack of sailors. This is what Exe have said

I think that's the thing. It all feels a bit "forced" to me from certain quarters.
If clubs are happy to do it I can't see why we cant have open events - especially regional ones - up to a certain size and with all due respect to the H2 class their "Nationals" based on previous turnout would easily fall inside that bracket. But don't be surprised if the turnouts are low, particularly in two man classes. Neither of the clubs I sail at are anywhere close to normality in terms of racing format or club access though both are happening. It interesting how the further north you go the less "back to normal" things are.
