That's quite understandable if that is the reason. But if true, why wouldn't the class say so. It seems odd to point vaguely at government and RYA advice, when neither of those organisations are putting out advice which would (directly) stop a sailing event.

Saves having to argue the toss endlessly with sea lawyers who've got their own frequently ludicrous interpretations. People who witter on about the need for complete transparency in everything rarely have any experience of how much hassle, stress, and most of all precious time is squandered trying to satisfy people who aren't going to listen anyway...

If you're a class association then members are paying in part for that committee to organise events.

It's also odd to point at government guidance and the RYA when the reason is actually something else (capacity at venue, volunteers, economics with no social, low turnout due to limited social).

Phantom sailors will be left scratching their head to what government guidance and RYA advice allows a laser nationals, but not a phantom one.

Its been on the cards for a while and if you look at the website you will see we have been kept informed recently.
Great shame but with the restrictions I think its very difficult for clubs to run events with any certainty of entries never mind having enough space on committee boats ribs etc.
Rock had the space in the compound but maybe not in the club, after all its a social event as well as sailing!

Government Personal Risk assessments for over 50's and being forced into lockdown.... just a scare story at the mo, but that might affect a few Solo sailors if it comes into fruition.

Time to buy shares in a hair dye manufacturer maybe?

Given the Con's voter demographic I doubt they'd risk it TBH.

I don't think you are forced to isolate, even if you are in the group. Not sure how you would get on with life insurance if you ignored it and then caught Covid and died.

The article cites RYA and government advice, but with no specifics. I don't see anything which would preclude on the water activity, especially single handers.
I suspect the racers are fine.  The safety boats, the committee boats, the mark layers etc less so.  Some have pointed out they may be an at risk group, even if not you are probably looking for same household volunteers to double man boats, or single manning.  While the RYA allows single manning, they say you should increase the number of RIBs.  So now you need ??twice as many PB2, FA, RIBs etc

Perhaps they just couldn't make the event economically viable without a full bar program?
Well - not impossible.  I've  always been anti-social so that side never appetised me!  But its not just the bar, the changing rooms, the toilets, the galley.  We've been remarkably lucky so far post "unlocking" with good weather.  For club sailing - bad weather means low numbers.  For an event like that bad weather may not stop a load of people turning up for a bit of "distant" social.

If you start saying "we couldn't do it because ABC" you get people saying but "we would have done without ABC" and others saying "this is how you get round ABC" (either how to re-interpret rules or how to actually do it - like 1-man RIBs)

Everyone wants to be the club that found a way to safely carry on.  No-one wants to be the club that shared the virus with 100 other people...
