Nobody was ever forced to sail or bimble around with boats..... or to enjoy it.  You either 'Do' or you 'Don't' .... like so much in life.

I am with you on this . I am a rubbish sailor but there is something about the joy/ frustration of racing that I wouldn’t ever want to be without. TBH I can really take or leave recreational sailing but I will be doing my bit at my club to get recreational going again as the club is looking for same household rescue crew to start with and my wife and I have volunteered .

Quite agree- I've still kept sailing, no racing (and not really missed it to be honest), but messing around on a few boats locally, even a laser twice... horrid experience.  LOL

I just haven't taken the plunge to buy anything again.... my comment was more in relation to Graeme's 'industry' point about making that cheque book commitment.

I didn't bother sailing tonight, never been one for just aimlessly swanning about despite it being a pleasant sunny windy evening. Sailing is a bit boring without the adversarial element. On the 'Industry' front I've never been busier, mainly because its a one man band these days, Ebay has gone off its face I must have cleared a couple of hundred bike helmets and kite sales for May have fully recovered and despite the disaster that was March and April, my figures are up on last year so there's an element of an ill wind...and the log jam bursting, don't suppose for one moment it will last, but it's bloody hectic to say the least right now.

Think you need to buy a Laser iGRF, yesterday was out all afternoon on very light shifty inland lake. Recently returned to Laser Sailing and so much fun can be had: perfecting every manoeuvre, sailing by the lee, sailing backwards (chasing a little swimming snake), starts, holding station, rudderless sailing.... simply being out on the water

Will be doing it all again on Sunday

Yep, been taking a chance to do some training, amongst the aimless enjoyment of being afloat again. After all, most sports are more training than contest.

I also like a bit of non racing sailing time. I wouldn't call it training as not that focussed, maybe a combination of play and practice. Simply about getting "into" the boat and how it feels in both light and blasting. I often find when racing I am inclined to get tight and try too hard, this playtime gets me feeling the boat when going sweetly balanced rather than being forced.

I like both racing and just blasting (or drifting) around, it's nice to be on the water either way and they are quite different pursuits. I'm not sailing at the moment, my wife is 'highly vulnerable' so we are staying in. Thankfully I have other things to keep me occupied, one of which is boat bimbling so I'm mostly spending my time usefully.

Part of the attraction 'Hybrid' is the freedom to evolve a boat without the strictures of a CA and a rule book hovering in the background or any commercial pressure.  As it is now it is both therapeutic and fun.  While it still involves a bit of basic design at this stage it is now more about general problem solving and refinement... If I had time and financial pressures to 'finish' or meet a particular commercial deadline it would inevitably represent more pressure than fun really.    The market is largely trashed for quite a while so there is no current rush at all.... As I've said already 'you never say no' but if it does develop in time to be 'tempting' that will be in part because I'm not tied to anyone’s programme or commercial agenda at this time.  In other words the boat will be all the better for an atypical, much longer than normal, development period. I recognise this is an unusual luxury at a very unusual time.  However if it goes in a non-commercial direction then that is fine as well.

Back to basics ... Another session on Friday afternoon planned today, again rig oriented.  It really does like plenty of rake and it is proving very easy now to sail extremely high and a tad quicker than expected.  But if you do 'foot off' a bit upwind the VMG is still v.good if not better... Nice to have both options on the water.  Will also stick with the smaller centreboard for now.  The size reduction tried last time had no -ve effects and some drag reduction will be in there... as will be a small weight cut.  The other area of work being planned is a mod to the hiking part of the gunwhales...hinted at previously. They will be shaped to be better for hiking and the side deck extended / flared by 50-60mm each side in this area .  The central spine of the boat makes a fantastic 'kick-bar' already but a little more width in the key upwind hiking area will compliment this to make for a very comfortable hiking position.   It is an admission I think we are just about there with the initial rig and foils + general balance .. so now time to start considering 'comfort' and controls.  So next week (after yet another session on Sunday)  it will be time for a return to the workshop.  Epoxy /Glass / Carbon  and tad of marine ply and paint will be involved ... just hope I've got enough latex gloves left- you just can't buy them that easily at the moment...!   Should be able to turn it around in 4-5 days with right prior planning and preparation ...
