So there are people from North of the Midlands saying they probably will still go, while the Midlands say maybe not?

Unfortunately I travel from the Midlands to the South East for business purposes a lot, both by car and by train so I am way more familiar than I'd like to be with journey times. I've can do a day trip via train to central London quite easily, we had HS2 20 years back but it was called the east coast main line. The bit that doesn't work for me is the appalling public transport  once I get to Kings Cross. Going to Farnborough rather than Alex Palace by train adds an hour each way, but its adding the bit of the journey I really dislike, ie  tube and local rail. Travelling by car to Alex Palace is usually 2.5 hours, google maps says Farnborough is 2 hours 50 minutes but means doing a long section of M25 so I think the journey time is likely to more like 3.5 hours. An extra hour each way might not seem much, but for me it's the difference between doing it as a day trip or not so I'll pass in future. As others have said its swings and roundabouts, those folk south or west of London will have an easier journey and I'm sure some folk in the Midlands and North will live with the extra travel time.

I’m guessing from this tweet / video, the Farnborough locals have heard the news about the Dinghy Show too

Lots of views about it being harder/easier to get to via various methods of transport. Wherever it is located, to attend at all, the onus is on the indivdual to have to make quite a lot of effort, you have to know it is on, and be prepared to spend time for travel and pay £75-100 for a day out. It attracts the committed sailors inluding new enthusiastic sailors who have never been to the show before, but very few potential sailors will even know it is on.

So the wider question is does the Show perform any real marketing function for any indivdual class at all? There is an angle for the maunfacturers, becuase it is a reletively cheap way to connect to your existing customer base, and there is a PR function for the RYA, but do any classes really benefit?

Assuming the answer is no, is there a better/ more cost effective way for the RYA , and the manufacturers/classes to show off dinghy sailing to a new audience, and try to expand their customer base? Maybe put the same funds into developing a really good online sailing web site to properly inform and help to direct people into the right classes and clubs for them, all year round?.

Is the function of the show to attract NEW sailors? Seems unlikely. But would a cycling show attract new cyclists? Or would they buy a Halfords special then decide to 'upgrade'?

I doubt the audience are never sailors.

As for classes... It's the opportunity for *my* CA to tell me what they can do for me. It's the opportunity for other classes to tell me why I should move class to get their "extras"... Is it coaching...? Is it technical support..? Is it events..? Is it something else?

It's the opportunity for me to think about what boat could be my n+1

Late starter you could try the slightly longer A34, M3 route to avoid the M25.

Back when dinosaurs wore short trousers, before ever stepping into a boat, we went as a family to Picketts Lock to see what all this sailing thing was all about. I guess it helped that it was 30 mins from home. Would we have gone if it was a 2hr drive each way? Knowing my father, maybe not. How did he know it was on? No idea.
I do agree though that the vast majority are probably existing sailors, and it used to be an opportunity to catch up with friends not seen since the end of last season and see what's new in the market. T'Internet and social media has changed all that now. Will I miss the M25 and North Circular? Not even a little bit.

It will be great not to have to use M25 and North Circular and anyone coming from the Midlands or west can avoid these roads too whereas we couldn't before.
