If London gets any less car friendly this could actually be a really good move. Time will judge!

Some people will be more inconvenienced, some will be less inconvenienced. Everyone was inconvenienced at Ally Pally one way or another and is well documented/moaned over the years. My gut feel is that overall, it is better for more people. And more likely better cost benefit for the organisers. I used to live in Farnborough and, whilst it's facilities are not impressive (the town centre is sh*te and to be avoided), most people are only going there for the various shows that take place anyway.

I take it as positive news, and maybe, if the numbers add up, they could do alternate years somewhere further North - though suspect the majority demographic is further  South.

I used to work for a serviced apartment company there so can recommend certain accomodation. Though, if you have deep pockets, can recommend the Aviator hotel.

I'm comparing to Durham so much same as you. I think we are on the limits of "day trip"...

But... comparing 3 hrs to KingsX and 5hrs to Farnborough is a little unfair.. you should probably be comparing door to door.

It's described at 5-10minutes drive from Farnborough. Shuttle bus would be good (I may have lots of shopping). Wood Green not exactly close to AllyPally or a flat walk...

It's ~3hrs to KingsX for me. Then 15 minutes walking within the station to the uground then 20mins on uground. Then 20mins+ walk up hill to AllyPally. So 4hrs. If the time is to be believed it could be 5hrs 10... Maybe not that big an issue.

I stayed over this year - and took 5hrs to get back because of engineering works anyway...

typical train journey from newcastle to farnborough is 5 hours, so thats a 10 hour round trip. the extra 4 hours travel makes it an unattractive day out.

Google Maps tells me a mile & a half from Farnborough Main - that's an easy walk and I think I saw that there'll be shuttle buses.
I always walked up to AP from Wood Green anyway and there's not that much difference really.

I've come round to it. Train a little bit longer, but no time wasted to cross London so, overall, isn't going to take all that much longer to get there. Ok, so it might not offer the 'night out in the city' that we used the weekend for but it's still a night out and won't have to do the 'Hour-on-tubes' getting to where we usually stayed so, all in all, I reckon it'll be a go-er  Big smile

Most visitors will want to catch a bus and that adds more travelling time.

They may run a shuttlebus, they used to from AP station up to the top of the hill.

What else did you feel didn't belong?

The jewellery stand was run by the wife of the MD of Harken UK and she does lovely jewellery based around sailing with things like bracelets with mini Harken blocks on them, necklaces with mini winches or silver boats on them (inc one with the Finn which must be heavy  LOL).
I guess if your other half is at the show all weekend running the Harken stand, and you've got a business based around sailors, why wouldn't you get a stand?

I figured it was something like that. I missed the subtly of the jewelry (not really my thing!)

Again, not bad but different and I hope the move attracts more of the CAs back to show.

Ah so the things I went for, were the things you didn't want!

Volvo - barely noticed them ! - but the sponsor lots of junior RYA sailing so no surprise they are there.

RIBs... Well I was there at least RIB window shopping! There will have been plenty of coaches, parents, clubs there doing exactly the same. The RIBs on display were almost all specifically set up to be safety / coach boats. You won't get that at SBS where they will be showing the "same basic boat" to the Ringo world but fitted out for that.

Paddle boards. My club has recently started doing a bit, my son wants to give it a go.

Holidays - not my thing but I'd find it odd if they were not there!

A line of CAs all telling me their boat is the best is actually rather dull! 80% won't be a boat I'd ever consider... ...not saying they shouldn't be there. They should. But would I travel for 5 hrs to get there to see some an old GP-14 ?

I went to the Caravan and Motorhome show at Event City, mostly 'cos it was close, and while it was nice to see the latest kit it was disappointing for the virtual absence of 'interesting' tech or stuff (granted caravans are far less interesting than dinghy to start with so they were on an uphill path to excite me) but the building, which is just a huge shed, did nothing to engender a feeling of adventure. I can see why Ally Pally would lend something positive to the atmosphere.

FWIW I might try to get to the dinghy show next year as I haven't been before (Boat Show in the late '70s was the last time) and a non-London location seems more attractive.
