If your light enough to sail a H2 then moving to the windier coast and buying a Finn which is a heavyweights boat would be a mistake. None of the guys at POSH looked big enough for a Phantom never mind pulling a FINN up a slipway.

Whilst I can see that the Phantom Class Marketing is firmly targeted at fat pie eaters, it also completely puts off anyone of average weight. Our club now has eight Phantoms sailed by those at the heavier end of the spectrum. Every time I consider that it might be fun to join them, a Phantom sailor writes a report or posts on this forum why this would be unwise!

Out of curiosity, what is the weight range for a Phantom sailor? I guess you can select a flatter sail/softer mast combo to help those of us who are not gravitationally challenged.

I am 95kg in my birthday suit - the H2 seems to be able to carry helms from 75kg to 100kg as it is quite a big boat at nearly 2m wide and the carbon rig / flat top sail allows the smaller guys to depower and the bigger guys also have enough power. I came 3rd at the Nationals which was held in 10 to 20 knots and the two guys ahead of me were lighter than me! I won the Inlands at Draycote which was not that windy and I was expecting the lighter guys to be giving me a headache as they should have been able to get planing whilst I would be struggling. I reckon that at 95kg I could sail a Finn - but happy to be corrected!

95kg is absolutely bang on the money!
I raced at 5ft 8in and 96-97Kg this year and go well.... the Yoofs vary between 95-107Kg (and 6ft 4in plus) dependent on venue, but we don't worry about them. You're welcome to come and have a go anytime! |

Could be wrong but I get impression there isn't as much variety in Phantom rigs as its tuneable with spreaders and rig tension, whereas Finns seem to have rigs/sails developed for the individual sailors weight, which sounds horribly expensive - but then there was Olympic money involved.
The two seem to be the favored choice for the heavyweights so I'd guess Finn will be popular just because of that. Theres more variety of boats the less pies you eat. How widely worldwide are Phantoms sailed?

I don't think there's many Phantoms outside of the UK tbh.
If you want some international sailing in a boat that can carry some weight look at the OK. While 80-95kg is probably optimum, biger sailors like Burt can be very fast and he's well over 100kg Lots of ex-Finn sailors moving into it internationally - they get the same style of sailing in big fleets, but at half the weight and half the cost with none of that free pumping stuff! |

You'll be pleased to know (not really but it is a nice turn of phrase) that my planned Xmas 'special' is a look at boats for the more generously built sailor. I know that this will give iGRF a festive furore - seeing that he believes that anyone larger than a National Hunt (careful how you say that) jump jockey should be put onto a starvation diet and will give some others worse indigestion than a plateful of sprouts. Due out over Christmas to give you all something more than a wishbone to chew on.... Dougal
