There needs to be more choice not less, better designed boats that make it easier to finish windy races, not stupid once it blows force four. Look at that choosing a boat thread a new guy having to choose between a Solo, Streaker and Lightning ffs how long is he going to last?

That was the 1950s. If you do the numbers you find there were a lot more classes in the late 60s and 70s than there are now, not fewer.

There is a need to be careful though about expecting those lower down in the fleet to keep coming to Nationals if they have difficulty in getting round the course in strong winds. In the 300 we have a course (just a triangle, no runs) for use when it gets windy, purely to help everyone get round the course and finish.

Chrisj and Dougaldog,
are you seriously suggesting that sailors who have the nerve to go out in strong winds are damaging attendances at Nationals ?

Too many classes = too many Championships?  Is another question you might ask.

Back in the day when there were maybe 20 serious racing classes, their National Championship turnouts typically exceeded 100 boats, and were worthy of column inches in the broadsheets.

Since then I think think that dinghy sailing has got a bit soft with self bailers, transom flaps, wetsuits, RIBs and all  ...

Well said Chris J for daring to suggest yet another potential factor into the falling attendance debate. The diehards might scoff at the suggestion but anything - and it really does have to be 'anything' that contributes to the decline should be there for discussion.
One of the observations that has been made is that it is the middle and back end of the fleet than might be staying away and maybe, just maybe, this could be a reason why. Certainly the question raised by Chris J needs further investigation.

Oh and yesterday they had four races so they are not down on the total number at all, unless of course the breeze kicks in earlier than forecast today

But then you may be getting more people at the shorter championships anyway. I know in the phantoms the three day event is looked upon as being preferential to something longer. Means less time off work and with two discards means that you can still qualify even if you cannot turn up on the Friday. Helps teachers as the event is in term time

My most distinct recollections of any Championships are the epic races, Burton Cup Tynemouth 11 finishers out of 80 starters, with an airsea rescue helicopter on the course, or POW Poole with 11 finishers out of 60 starters.  Never stopped me from doing more Championships, it is what you live for ... what puts me off doing Championships is light or no wind, most likely at a venue that does not get good sea breezes, when I do one of those I vow that I would have been better off staying at home.

Though an important aspect of the Championship is a day with an AP holding the fleet on shore, great for looking at boats, listening to sailmakers set up rigs and generally catching up with old friends, so perhaps an opportunity missed.
