Vauxhall leased Silverstone for about a week when they launched the Vectra, every Vauxhall owner in Britain was invited for a days sport, perhaps one of the boat builders could try something similar.

Silverstone is not cheap, we leased it once to set up a bike trade show, more money in bikes than I'd venture to suggest there is in dinghydom.

Boat builders should content themselves with the 'relatively' low cost of water based venues. If I were planning a wet launch of something like a dinghy or range of them I'd go to somewhere like Willen Lake at Milton Keynes. Hotel on site to stay in, do presentations, bit of water to try the kit, cheap as chips...

I was thinking along the lines of one of the larger inland clubs.
Central, so Midlands area.
Hotels and B&B's, yes, I would however pick somewhere with plenty of room for tents, campers etc.

Phantoms, with 60 boats - great turn out.

BUT with only 1/3 of the fleet finishing the first race: Should they have gone out? Isn't racing in conditions that more than 1/2 the fleet don't want to sail in a great way of ensuring people don't bother to enter the next year??

It had been gusting 40 knots before they went out. After it layed off a bit they went for it. It then piped up a bit causing a few to go in. However if you are going to wait until it's force 3 or below aren't you risking that there won't be a championships at all wasting everyone's annual leave and money? I don't think there were any grumblings at the event
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Question makes no sense to me. What are they supposed to do, everyone is there, bin it so nobody sails?

My most distinct recollections of any Championships are the epic races, Burton Cup Tynemouth 11 finishers out of 80 starters, with an airsea rescue helicopter on the course, or POW Poole with 11 finishers out of 60 starters.  Never stopped me from doing more Championships, it is what you live for ... what puts me off doing Championships is light or no wind, most likely at a venue that does not get good sea breezes, when I do one of those I vow that I would have been better off staying at home.

Though an important aspect of the Championship is a day with an AP holding the fleet on shore, great for looking at boats, listening to sailmakers set up rigs and generally catching up with old friends, so perhaps an opportunity missed.
Happily living in the past

It's also the curse of the modern, shorter championship.  Lose a day and you've lost a 1/4 or a third of your sailing.
