I'm definitely not sad or suffering in any way, thanks. It's just that when you and some others throw abuse at other people and the things they love time and time again, some of us will defend them and the choices they make. The main way that I am on "the other side" is that I respect my fellow sailors and the craft they choose to sail, whereas others smugly think that they have the right to insult other people and the boats they sail. What you are ignoring in your normal haste to insult someone is that time and time again (as in the Laser Nationals thread, for example) other people have objected to such "jokes" before I have. If such posts are jokes then a lot of people are failing to see the "funny side", so they are either not at all funny, or mere insults wrapped in a transparent cover.

Let's get this back on track please! The debate was excellent until it became personal on page 15...

Minisails for a small class membership have been getting double figures for a number of years.

Back on topic - perhaps the numbers at various class Nationals are as to be expected in todays world and look back on the glory days of 3-figure attendances with fond memories of a time not coming back.
As a part-solution - perhaps various similar classes might like to share a Nationals event - and at a location that suits families - boosting overall numbers and getting classes to bond more - and being more cost effective for clubs to run. Perhaps like RS do, with their joint classes at Hayling Island and, this weekend, at Weston. Just because RS classes share a DNA, doesnt mean that perhaps Fireflies and Albacores (as a poor example) couldnt do the same - I am sure their are better examples. Just thinking aloud as to solve a problem, not complain about it. |

Long ago I suggested something similar along the lines of a group of the cottage builders supporting a marketing incentive where they not only organised events for the classes they were supporting but the organisation drove sales for them, naturally it fell on deaf ears. Phantoms, Solutions V3000's and those other boats that Ovington and Vander Craft were doing sprang to mind at the time.

Yep, I firmly believe that builders could and should, in conjunction with class associations, take the initiative to support and help drive multi-class events like Nationals. Surely it would help drive business and visibility for them all?

Classes already share events. Sometimes two classes will find they are a congenial combination and share events regularly for several years. Particularly works if its a two hander and a single hander. Cherubs and Moths in the pre foil days when both had a similar number of competitors was an example. I particularly remember the year when our fixtures sec in the Cherubs suddenly found himself completely overwhelmed by other responsibilities, and the wonderful Colin Newman was almost fixtures secretary for both classes. Thankyou again Colin!

As Jim says, it does happen. Sometimes driven by Classes, sometimes by Clubs and of course RS are not the only builder, Ovingtons also put on an event for their classes.
