Only because RS repeatedly use the figures for the combined classes to pump up their "marketing" You don't see Laser doing that much to their credit ... Blimey does it really matter anyway ? Development classes allow flat cut / full cut and multiple sails etc etc. Yachts also often allow multiple sails of course and non-Smod traditional classes allow any sail maker you like. Are you suggesting this is all 'wrong' or 'non-purist' as well ? As for Laser .... they would not be found using a numbers 'tactics' would they - of course not ... they don't even seem capable of knowing which way 'up' currently let alone, judging by their recent track record, of marketing anything to anybody .... You should rather be celebrating that anyone wants to do any major events - the overall sport is in relative decline and scoring points off the others .. as if it helps 'defend' your chosen ride perhaps ... is not any part of any overall solution. The Aero is doing just great - and the 'knockers' amongst us don't help anybody - and never did. But maybe the knockers unintentionally help keep its name in peoples mind anyway ;-) It is not my class either but what exactly is your point ? I look round a quiet dinghy park and can't tell what is a Laser radial from a 'regular' Laser - same as for Aeros. I don't know if 'that' Solo is the latest Winder with a 3DL sail or is a 60's tree made and rotting clunker - essentially different classes in all but name... and in the big picture it simply does not matter one jot. Aeros are selling cos the owners mostly like them ... and then tell other people.

For me the question is why are we corrupting and compromising sailing (in all its forms), the greatest sport there is, to suit the great-god television? |

I think those who object to it do so because they feel like they are being hoodwinked by whoever wrote the report ... Just say "We had 114 boats across the 3 classes" and I think most people would commend that ... It feels like anti-marketing to me .... Edited by Old Timer - 06 Sep 17 at 2:28pm |

Or, "we had 114 boats across the 3 sail sizes". I can't see what the fuss is about, really. Sounds like they had a fun week.

Because the money that's used to provide for the grassroots of the sport in parts of the world where they don't have a big, rich national governing body like the RYA is allocated on viewership figures... Less money from the likes of the IOC means sailing would become more reliant on chasing and keeping commercial relationships. |

I think that 114 people WANT to sail Aero after so few years whatever the rig is the important point. Club sailors make their own decisions depending on personal preference.

Reasons to sail an Aero....
It's incredibly light, It's fun, It's relatively cheap (I'm not sure about this one) It's comfortable to sail It has a superb rig It's made by RS It's better than a L@ser ........... ![]() |

Given that sailing seems to remain stubbornly about third last in the ratings and even a significant improvement would only net the entire sport $0.5 mill per year, maybe it's nor worth the chase?

+1, not the most comfortable boat to sail, easily eclipsed by the D0 and surprisingly the Solution. Having said that my tryout was the 9 and I often wonder had I tried the 7 maybe it might have felt a better 'balance' that 9 mtr is a long sail, dacron and the centre of effort moves about with the resulting effect on the ability to set the boat in a 'groove'. |
