Same here. We got a Laser so that our kids could sail on their own (different rig options) and that I could sail if I couldn't find a crew for my double hander. I travel to regional Open meetings with my Ent, but not the Laser.

Apologies if my post came over in the wrong tone... my point was that at this moment I feel the laser has the better fleet however I wouldn't be surprised if this was to change in the not to distant future as RS seem to be setting an example of how to do things right opposed to LP

In contrast, in the tiny class I was sailing in around the same time, people would drag boats they had not raced for the whole year out of the shed to do the nationals, because it was the only time they could get a fleet to race against. It's also easier for organisers to contact a larger proportion of the fleet and excite them or make them feel guilty. It would be an interesting area to get some stats on.

So is the Aero one class or 3?
Seems they are 3 classes except when RS are writing headlines ... Is that about it? |

The joys of having a paid for marketing team and class manager. As far as local round the cans racing it is treated as 3 classes (certainly at my club where the solitary guy swaps rigs regularly). 3 different sized sails 3 different PY numbers. Same as the Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7.
They can, of course, race boat on boat with whatever sized sail they like in class racing but, unless conditions dictated otherwise, the front spots would usually be filled with the biggest sail. |

Is the Aero in some way different to the Laser then?
Laser has different rigs. I reckon I'm probably the only one here who didn't own or sail a Laser at one time or other, not that I haven't tried them, they are the single most boring experience one can have sailing imv, but they do serve a purpose in giving cheap skates access to good club racing and we all know there are plenty of cheap skate dinghyists. |

AT Lee we have an Aero fleet but they race on PY amongst themselves, which for the rest of the singlehanders is a bit of a shame as we end up with two smaller fleets on results although we all start and race the same course at the same time. To me its a bit of an odd compromise. but something we will have to discuss for next year. |

The issue about 'is the Aero one class or three ' is a bit daft but boringly and still regularly repeated. The 'argument' is by now really only indicative of the attitude of those who hold it. For that matter is the Laser one class or ...... er over all those years how many exactly ? People should simply sail and race what they like themselves and for their own reasons. Not all will subscribe to the justifications of others anyway. If you like the laser (or something else) well good luck to you, most of us have probably owned one at some time or other. But lighten up a bit there guys - others will sail other boats cos they like them just like you still like the venerable old Laser....
RS have done an excellent job with the Aero and comments about them employing Peter Barton or whoever is not the point surely. If that was all that was needed to 'break through' then that is what others perhaps needed to do as well. 'Success' and building a good numbers following relies on many factors. And no I don't have a connection with RS and don't own an Aero .... I sail something else cos I like it as well. Edited by Cirrus - 05 Sep 17 at 4:31pm |

Well said Cirrus.
All this tribal point scoring is as boring as it is pointless.
