Hi guys
Can some one help please A friend of mine has bought an old 49er for sh*ts and giggles and he is slowly getting it ready to sail. We pulled up a jib for the first time today, he has 2, and the first had clips to hold it to the forestay as expected but the other (both are Neil Prides) just had cloth loops! Are we meant to thread the forestay through these or more likely, what are we missing? Can some one please advise Cheers Ian

Never sailed one but I've seen the pics of the loops. Does it have a wire luff? If not then I'd guess you have to thread the forestay through it before hoisting (hold the mast up with a trap wire while you do so then use the boat breaker to tension the forestay). Will have a quick scan of Higher and Faster as IIRC they show rigging the 49er at some point.
Edit :- Yup, that's how they do it :) And jib cunningham (tack downhaul?) to the back hole in the forestay fitting with the bottom corner of the jib in line with the top of the ferrule, then jib sheet to the centre hole on the clew plate......

Thanks but this doesnt help... it only talks about the clips, what do we do when the jib doesn't have any?

The cloth loops have little flat clips that you press to undo, then put round the forestay and slide back together as you hoist the jib

Thanks but no. We have two sails, both Neil Prides, and one does indeed have the clips as you would expect the other just cloth loops, stitch both sides and with no means of disconnecting? |

Seems like a bodge job, possibly due to unavailability of replacement clips (they did break fairly regularly!). You will probably have to thread the forestay through them, as in the post above. Can you ask the previous owner?

Probably wouldn't cost a great deal to get a sailmaker to sort it out?
