Does anyone really care ?

I hate to think what potential future sailors are thinking if they read this thread

Peoples opinions - whether they be sexist, racist, homophobic etc are their opinions and, in civilised society, are generally kept to themselves. Its not just sailing - its in life.,

Why drag this out ?

Somewhere between 5-7% of the UK population are gay/lesbian. 45% of those are participating in sport, that's about 3 million people if my maths is correct........this is an assumption on my part but I suspect a large number of those care about homophobia in sport.

A proportion of that figure do sail but not all in dinghy clubs

http://gaysailing.org.uk/

This club was runner up in the RYA Club of the Year awards 2011

As for what potential sailors are thinking......who knows? Some might be delighted to see it being discussed. Some might think that raised awareness of the issue is a fantastic thing. Some might think that even discussing GLBT issues is a no no.

All sorts of rubbish goes through my mind and generally stays there. If I had acted on some of it I would have wound up in prison long ago. Unfortunately not everyone behaves like you and I.

surely that was nothing to do with sexuality, more that you should have grown out of your Barbie-pink phase by the time your age reached double-figures

Ok, as we know most sailing club changing rooms and showers are open plan.

So you have a (excuse any non pc descriptions) transgender/ transexual person going from male to female but haven't had surgery yet, what changing room would you expect them to use?

If the women turn round and say they still have male parts so should be in the male changing rooms, are the women being homophobic? Or just pointing out he/she is technicaly a man?

What if he/she didn't feel comfortable using the mens changing rooms?

Should the RYA (and other sporting bodies) suggest there is a male, female, non gender specific and childrens changing rooms and showers?  Or should we all muck in together?
