My drawings were for a web "beginners guide". That was the point of the nine simple rules.

But there definitely seems to be a place for posters with explanations of the full fat rules for the average club sailor. That Allen A3 poster seems like a nice piece of work, and I could easily imagine a series of maybe half a dozen A4 posters with the same drawings, but divided up across posters so its not quite so intimidating as the one big one, being quite popular. Here's the poster, for those who didn't follow the link.

You can get a PDF here. http://www.allenbrothers.co.uk/uploaded_files/ISAF_Racing_Rules_of_Sailing.pdf

You're right about Port/starboard/right/wrong Brass, never occurred to me. Perhaps we should have black boats being give way and white boats having right of way?

Would have the advantage of not needing colour printing, too.

I think charts like this, and the Elvstrom one, are best seen as Problem Solving tools rather than learning aids (at least for beginners).

Don't think pure black and white is a good idea:  colour attracts attention and adds meaning, as long as the meaning is clear.

How about red for port tack, green for starboard tack and red circle and slash through the boat for the give way boat?

I like the slashed through circle.

Why not put the colour somewhere else on the poster where it doesn't affect comprehension, though? That way you get your 'eye-catching' but still permit those without the colour printing facility to  use the poster.

A number of people can't distinguish red and green.

If your public is consists of beginners however, green and red works really well (traffic lights). I noticed that with children especially. Additional symbols tend to clutter up the visual information.

Green and red - or brown and brown for the colour blind!

At least they won't get elecrocuted like with the old wiring system!

Blue and yellow seems to be quite common on the "who is in the right" drawings Gordon and others have posted on here. Works for me.

How about this as a concept? Red or Green dot in normal crew position for port or starboard (should they have embedded P and S?) and black X or yellow tick for ROW or give way?

No, I'm using the dots for port and starboard and the ticks and crosses for give way/entitled to room eg

I've reworked the summary with some new pics - see

http://www.devboats.co.uk/simplerules/

There are a couple of Don becker's rules I haven't yet figured out sketches for though, and the format still needs work.
