I think that's a little bit unfair. The industry knows enough about design engineering and behaviour of materials to be able to make some reasonable predictions. If you compare the design, engineering and materials of RS' boat compared to say an old polyester monolithic csm 470 then they are in an entirely different league as far as longevity goes. I don't need to wait ten years to be completely confident about that. Sure I despise marketing puff and the lies and deceit of the advertising profession (all those press releases where it says 'xxx said so and so' which actually means "or at least he would have said it if I'd put the piece of paper in front of him/her and told her/him to read it out loud"), but if they've built durability into the design using the right materials then let them say so. If you tell them to qualify it too much you end up with info full of meaningless weasel words which means nothing. Edited by JimC - 26 Jun 14 at 11:40am |

Point taken. I did not mean to imply that I doubt the quality of the boats. Actually, if I was in the market for a single hander at the moment, the Aero is what I would be going for. Edited by ChrisB14 - 26 Jun 14 at 11:35am |

RS are quite specific about resin & reinforcement but say nothing about the core material.
If it is standard PU, eg. Tricast then durability could be compromised.
I would have expected PVC unless they are breaking ground with something like a PET (potential bonding issues).
Take a look at a beat up 600 to see what happens to foam under a thin epoxy/glass layer, albeit 600's don't actually fall apart, but they don't like being driven up a shingle beach every week like 20 year old Lasers do.
One for the nerds:

I've repaired quite a few Lasers over the years, including 20 year old boats. However, I haven't yet met one that liked being driven up a shingle beach. ![]() |

Bitter? Moi? It's bad enough getting a constant beasting on handicap but when I get my arse handed to me over the water, I have to consider opening up my wrists... ![]() Edited by iGRF - 27 Jun 14 at 5:12pm |

No, they don't love it, but mine which carries the scars of being launched and recovered single handed, off the trolley, from the shingle at Eastbourne for 6 years has stood up to it pretty well. There aren't many boats that I'd want to do that with.
