You could sail a nice boat the rest of the time and just sail your Laser the handful of times a large regatta is on...
'Tis true though. When I excitedly told my Laser racing friends I was getting a D Zero they looked blankly at me. None had heard of it, one asked why I wanted a boat with a kite and wings but most hadn't even heard of Devoti. Some probably didn't know what a Finn was either.
I think the average Laser racer does not care about boats but about racing (or cheap sailing). Nowt wrong with that, but it is easier to talk about boats than racing, so the forum tends to attract a certain type of boat lover.

That would not be as good an idea as you think! You'd probably find that you were horrifically slow. The flipside of tough competition is that you need to train lots in order to be competitive.

To put up with the sort of crap spouted on that measurers web sight, they'd have to be 'one chop short of a barbie' so they're not going to be exactly at the top of the mensa scale are they?

Disagree - skills are all the same i.e. totally transferable. Fleet management is all about logic and decision making and you don't forget that. Certainly hasn't done my occasional laser sailing over the past decade any harm. You'll just get in the laser and think its a sh*t boat, like you are sailing through treacle. Whilst on Valium. Even if the zero had a different style of sailing, variety is often a benefit to ones laser sailing. Old coach once said he learned more about laser sailing in 6 months of soling sailing than he did a decade of laser sailing. Open your mind! |

Well you've certainly shown that you can do it, and yes, the racing skills are totally transferable. Boat speed I'm still not totally convinced on though!

Skills transferable through different classes eh'. That sounds a bit like my tuning guide theory. A good sailor should be able to feel what's wrong with the boat, any boat, not need to look it up.
I know all these things because I am so bad, whatever I do is wrong so what ever I don't do must be good.....see? I wish children would stop laughing at me though.....

If it s a boat you are familiar with, even from a long time ago, you will be ok. If it is similar, broadly speaking, to what you have sailed before, it'll be an hour or two before you are getting 99% out of it. If you haven't sailed for a few months or more, getting the more subtle nuances for going downwind in waves, as well as proper fitness takes a little while. Solo sailors generally are fine pretty quickly in Phants, for instance. |

You are right that the "RS Aero poses a major threat" I have had a trial sail and I was so impressed that I placed an order. It is a quantum leap ahead of the Laser as you might expect from a modern design.
The Laser is far from dead and there may be some confusion but, before you write off the Aero, have a sail in it and decide for yourself.

I found that when I sailed the Blaze I really needed to be in it every week or I would not be right in tune with the boat (as you needed to be to get the best out of it). With a Laser I found I could jump in to it even after several weeks (sometimes months) out and be pretty much in tune with it with an hour or so. Some boats you can do this. some boats you cannot.
