7 month old boat used only a few times described with a set of used sails and a set of new sails. Would you expect the used sails to be no older than the boat and used on those few occasions only too?

Any arguments either way would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't be surprised if the used sails were older than the boat, having been bought for practising to preserve the new sails bought with the boat.

Yup, I'd not be surprised on a boat that age if the unused sails were the ones that came with it, and the person was either learning with an old set or simply had picked them up somewhere as spares.

I guess it is the sort of thing you need to check on when buying from a private sale. "Used" means different things to different people.

I agree with Gareth and Rupert. New boat with a set of secondhand club/training sails and new sails kept for Opens/Nationals is far from unusual. Caveat emptor, I'm afraid.

I bought my boat in bits. I had the sail first then a year later I could afford the rest of it. Therefore mine would have been older if I had sold it. So long as it has the new ones as well Nevermind, that's a nice bonus, not something to worry about, you can use them on the windy club days to keep the new ones fresh

I'd expect the rags to be older than the boat too. Think its unanimous.

No I'd expect all of the sails to be the same age as the hull or newer.

If all of the sails were older then question it, but as one set were new then it should be obvious that the previous owner either had them from an earlier boat or bought some second hand ones to preserve the set that came with the new boat. I really don't see what the issue is here

It's not obvious they're older.  Either way you're making an assumption which can lead to disappointment, much better ask and know for sure.
