If you post with a false name, you can hardly expect people to know who you are? I can understand handicap frustration - I sold the Comet years ago partly because I simply couldn't sail it to handicap, where I could other boats. That has now re-adjusted possibly too far the other way, as the Phantom has downwards, maybe. I guess the results from early season will show us. However, if the purpose of the boat is mainly class racing, then handicap results are neither here nor there - no point in throwing the baby out with the bath water. If handicap racing is it, and the steed doesn't really matter, then choosing a boat where you feel you get your just desserts is probably a sensible thing to do. |

So how the f**k can any of you defend all this gerrymandering?
My (stella fueled) message to all you lucky 'class racing is best' nob heads is stay off the thread, we don't want to hear from you, you've got a life, we haven't, ours is being screwed up by these bloody PYAG people and their damned computer. If it is so bad people are having to sell boats because of their foolishness, how much worse does it have to get, before they'll listen? |

Bullsh1t Bingo
He said Gerrymandering!!!!!! The point has been adequately made by Jim, the change in numbers makes diddlysquat difference to general results in a club series, it just makes the results a little tighter, which is largely the point of the changes. If you are getting regularly shafted at your home club, then in accordance with RYA guidelines, your club should look to locally adjust to suit your local conditions. If locally the PY for a Phantom on PYS comes out at 1020 with a low certainty figure then go halfway and shift it to 1010, if you have a high level of certainty then move it all the way. BUT, in reality it will not make much difference. One of my boats is taking an 8pt hit this year, great. Just means I have to try a little harder, eliminate some of the smaller mistakes in order to keep winning. I sort of understand why we get the moaning but if you take part in club sailing for some semi-competitive fun to keep your hand in what does it matter. If you're super competitive then you're big event will be the class nationals and handicaps dont matter a jot. Edited by craiggo - 28 Feb 14 at 8:03pm |

I find it hard to compute people on here wanting to sell their boats because of a PY alteration. I have been with my class for nearly 20 years. Almost routinely, the handicap drops (SMOD) most years and it gets harder to beat competitors in certain classes. But I love the class I bought into - and everytime I bought a new one, they are my pride and joy and the envy of many eyes at my club. Whatever happens with the PY people know where i am, they know i'm a decent sailor. And I think a certain amount of respect comes thro the fact that you stick with your class thro thick and thin. Chopping classes to try and put some pots on your empty, dusty mantlepieces is...at the end of the day.. no route to respect and acceptance amongst your peers.

Hang on... I know I shouldn't rise to it, but isn't gerrymandering a process for messing with the numbers to obtain a desired result rather than accept the result that come naturally? And isn't that what you've been saying *should* happen? That the PYAG should ignore the numbers that come out of the system and somehow fiddle things so they produce a more "correct" result? |

Graeme you are missing my point. I agree with you!!!
I have sold my boat because it was time for me to sell it. I am not buying another because it serves me no purpose. Why spend 9k to sail and get results like you are a c..k on handicap when you know in most classes you can sail in you are reasonable. If you have no fleet in the area to sail against then you only have handicap! Hence the forced choice is fleet racing. My choice has been taken away. On handicap most of the time I will only be able to achieve mediocrity. So I have chosen class racing instead to see where I stand. Handicapping now means nothing. ( red wine not Stella) |

Craiggo, some of us don't give a s..t about series results. To bring together the best boats and crews in the country can only happen with handicap.
Its proving it cant work! Different sizes and different strengths in different boats in different conditions in different locations. We agree on the fact that class racing is the only way for satisfaction. A good World Championships is better than the Olympics! The playing field can never be level. Why bother? |

But for the type of event you mention where the great and the good come together, the home club or group of clubs has a fairly good idea of adjustments to be made to make the racing as fair as it can be on those stretches of water, and therefore the official py list should make no difference to your sailing enjoyment, especially as you profess to not caring about club series results. Given that comment, I really understand your argument even less.
I do however agree that class racing for the ultra competitive with enough disposable income is the way to go, but it's not for everyone. I've been there done that and am happy sailing near my home with my kids and friends in a mildly competitive environment where the py system works sufficiently well. |
