Anyone got any stats on the PY variance at a typical Laser open meeting?
i.e. the spread caused by crew skill?

Not Laser, but the leaders in the Fireball Nats fleet are likely to be 5-10 mins ahead of the back of the fleet, with some stragglers another few mins behind that. And this in a 50-60 minute race. I just wish I knew how the buggers do it

Typical of most fleets. So how does that translate as a spread on py?

That's pretty typical IME. In our club personal handicapping system we divide the sailors into 5 bands at 5% intervals. |

Take the conservative end: 5 min spread in a 50 min race - makes the arithmetic easy. That equates to a 97 point spread between that front and the back of the fleet. So either the world champ is sailing his off 880 ish or I'm in the 1060 region. That's taking both extremes. Lets assume the PY is right for the middle of the fleet. Then the world champ is on about 920 & I'm on 1025 or thereabouts. That's why a couple of points movement between 'my' class and the other - broadly similar - classes (Osprey, 5o, Hornet) sailed at SSC doesn't concern me one jot. I do worry about those pesky Merlins a bit, but we have a high quality fleet so I expect to be beaten by them, on the spreadsheet if not on the water. |

I'm still noting, only inland sailors are satisfied.

These figures make worring about 1 few points ... well pointless. May be better served just having a few scratch groups ...

The leader isn't worried about his result compared to a back marker, but with his result compared to a similar standard sailor in a different class. That makes a few points here or there make a big, big difference, whether it be between 1st and 2nd or 10th and 11th. That is what sailors are interested in on the spreadsheet. The results will always be shifting, depending upon how windy a year has been, where the boats are sailed and who is sailing them. All we can hope for is a system where there are enough returns for it to make some sort of sense.
The only viable split I can see would be to have tidal and non-tidal. Yes, different bits of sea are, well, different, but so are rivers and big lakes. But if clubs can't/won't change things, maybe a group of all the sea clubs could come up with figures. |
