Of course not, why would a series mark a really popular boat beyond banditness for reasons other than altruism? Come on even you're not that naive.

Rupert I understand but I have had some exposure this winter to watching a very well sailed Merlin and a Phantom race on a small to average size lake and believe me the Merlin was somewhat quicker. I have also seen the Phantom race this Merlin and many others on the Sea and the Phantom really struggles to get even close.

Fair handicap for a well sailed Merlin? 945-950.

The Phantom on the Sea? 1020-1025.

Why anyone would choose to go Handicap racing I don't know, why don't you all go to the pub, sit round a table and nominate a junior class, a single hander and a double hander that suits your water, go fleet racing and ban handicap racing ... Racing will be improved, sailors will have more fun, turnouts will increase, just a thought.

Because we don't want to, we want a Governing body that is enthusiastic about getting the current system right, not just tinkering here and there, obvious targets, not dedicating enough time or effort to get it right.

Rupert, of course you have a good point and that is an obvious solution, but the chances of our club agreeing to implement a solution are very very low, few understand the PY system and it's recent changes.
Fewer still would know how to even suggest changes.

This means that the handicaps become a sort of 'Doomsday Book' that can't be questioned.
It is not even apathy as there are sailors that have an opinion, it is just not possible to get a majority so there is a tacit agreement to do nothing.

It seems to me that only the bigger clubs alter their PY to suit the water they are sailing on.

One of the problems of PY returns is that with the exception of the Grand Prix events, the best sailors are generally sailing in one design fleets, so PY handicap fleets are populated by a vast range of ability levels ( I am trying to be polite) which will inevitably produce wacky results.

There used to be a document that explained how the analysis was done to obtain the PY numbers, but I can't find it. Did I imagine it, and if not does anyone have a link to it?

It's there to find an average figure, how can it do this if it did not have a spread of abilities? Confused

Also to stop the average being unfairly pulled up or down. The very best and the very worst results are not used for each class.
