I think there is considerable merit in grouping classes together and then just racing off scratch.
You could have 3 - 5 groups depending on the number of sailors that turn out and then just get on with it ... seems it would feel more honest in a way ... If is turns out one class seems to be the bandit of the group you can bump it up to the next ... It may have the effect of people consolidating to specific classes too ... then what have you got? fleet racing.

Because a well sailed Phantom on a round the cans course inland is a fast as a well sailed Merlin. With no spinnaker to faff with, half the crew weight, a significantly lighter hull and almost as much white sail, it's not going to be much slower especially if there is a tight reach which on round the cans courses there often is. Sorry but i don't think that Phantom sailors have any cause to moan about a PY drop :p Edited by Paramedic - 27 Feb 14 at 7:06pm |

Not wishing to be rude Paramedic but I'm afraid your incorrect and I do feel Phantom sailors have the right to moan about a PY drop, oh and I don't sail Phantom.
I have also some expierence this winter of watching a Phantom and Merlin inland.

That's as maybe, but we're an Island with miles of coast, where Phantoms are also sailed, and will be lapped by a Merlin, so why should we be dictated to by bloody puddle jumpers? |

I would not normally post but I don't like to see a good class being killed off when the RYA should be promoting dinghy sailing. I have some expeirence of sailing a Phantom and this h/c is just not cricket.

The PY's are all based on club returns, so its bizarre that people feel aggrieved when they are adjusted - its not the RYA picking on anyone, they have no influence, just process the results. You could just as well argue that Lasers now have a generous PY as so many exist, the vast majority of which are sailed well below optimum.
Two years ago everyone complained about Phantoms being complete bandits, now when they move based on results its all unfair..........

Can anyone tell me why there's no numbers of races listed for the ENs? Not that I'm objecting massively to the Alto number, it'd just be nice to know how much data they've based it on.
