That's what happen at our club a few years ago but gradually managed to get it changed. Currently the RO are still putting the numbers into a spreadsheet and then they get uploaded into SW by hand. This year we've got someone it write an amazing spreadsheet which the RO only puts sail numbers in to get all the detail and once the results get sorted and printed it emails a csv file (which with one click goes into SW) to a dropbox account so the Sailing Sec doesn't even have to come to the club for the results. |

Indeed. You know when you buy one that you will be out of date in class racing terms in due course. Same for handicap racing, it seems until someone comes up with a foolproof correction scheme for older boats. Trouble is, what about older boats that up-date their rigs, foils etc. - what correction should they get? Unsolvable problem, I'd suggest. You can guesstimate the effect of e.g. a carbon rig, but that's just another opening for controversy.

When Elaine first got a British moth, three or four years ago, the comet and the moth started at the same time. Now, before this change, the comet starts two and a half minutes before us moths.

Hi
Naturally grumpy today as a Phantom sailor, just lucky we have no Merlins as they are now only 12 points away, or just over one point in the old numbers. How can that be correct? |

Pursuit races are a perfect case for personal handicaps - you see a benefit in terms of boat-on-boat racing on the water (otherwise, I don't like 'em).

The BM handicap is a total mystery. How come I've only ever seen a BM do well in pretty much zero wind, and never once it is even sit on the deck weather on even a medium sized lake, yet the handicap never goes up? Is it because it wins those drifters by such huge margins (and fairly often) on rivers, it distorts the numbers massively? They are certainly a boat which needs local adjustment.

Pursuits races are just much more fun that normal handicap races.
And no waiting around after the race to know who's won.

After talking to the rya a couple of years ago, you are spot on. Had hoped now hunts and Frampton are putting in results it would start to change. Just glad it hasn't got worse again. ![]() The handicap works at our puddle, but wouldn't work at your club, Rupert.

I reckon that one of the idiosyncracies of the way the PY numbers are currently calculated is that results in conditions that really don't suit a boat aren't generally included. The foiler moth handicap, for instance, will have next to no results in none foiling conditions contributing.
But the BM certainly seems to have congregated where conditions suit it - and why not. But because PY reflects the actual observed performance on the water classes that are only sailed where conditions suit them will tend to get a handicap that reflects that. Edited by JimC - 27 Feb 14 at 1:29pm |

That is true - we ran the final race of the cvrda nationals that way a few years ago (as a separate trophy), taking the results from the rest of the weekend, and it worked pretty well. I'd forgotten. |
