Regarding Point 1. People are getting taller however this is across the board typically so is not going to have a marked effect at the extreme end of the short and tall scale. I doubt we will see a 5-10% difference across the last 25 years but I am sure you could trend this across previous data.

Regarding Point 4. The crew weight for an SB20 is 270kg. Therefore there is scope for two 120kg people to sail together with a 30kg kid or alternatively as a pair at 135kg each. Lets face it with their excellent physical prowess at that weight the kite drop would be a piece of piss for the two of them:) As a comparison for real world demographics my experience of this class has most boats sailing with either 3 or 4 adults.

Is the above facile and eerroneous enough for you.

1. Population averages present an out of date picture as they are based on measurements of present day adults. There is general agreement that amongst the teenagers of today there are many more tall people - the stats will only change in 25 years time.

In the same way BMI stats do not seem to cope. even skinny tall people are classed as borderline obsese

2. Rupert - I deliberately quoted the height and weight of a rugby player who was identical in size to Ian Percy - if Sexton is bulked up to the max then so is Percy. My point is that at 1m87 Sexton would be one of the shortest players on the pitch.

3 With current weight limits many Star sailors diet to get down to weight.

4.Phil - I know exactly how you feel. Perversely even the keelboats that can carry weightare introducing weight limits (Dragon, Etchell, J24, SB20....)

The simple fact is that for the larger young fit sailors, especially in inland dinghy sailing clubs, there is no obvious pathway for them to continue sailing, whilst they are being actively recruited by other sports (rowing, rugby, basketball...) As the average size of fit healthy kids increases sailing in Europe and North America will have a demographc problem.

Ok, I'm old fashioned, to just converted 110 kg to old money. Turns out to be 17 stone. There can be very few people around who are that weight without either being very heavily muscled or somewhat on the plump side - probably just those who are around the 6'6" mark or taller and broad with it. However much the population is growing, I can't see that we are talking about a very large % of the population at all. Couple that with other sports positively looking for such big men, and the size of the market is pretty tiny. From what our big men have said on here, they find the Phantom copes with people weighing 17 stone or more. If others want another, even better weight carrier, then I'm sure market forces will prevail.

Oh, and even being small, quite agree that putting a weight limit on the Star was a shame. Like putting a weight limit on Sumo.

there are talented sailors who go well and there are those that get there through training. those who have both win Olympics.

unfortunately there are a whole load of us who have bad memories and cannot remember what they should be doing and when they should be doing it. hopefully there is enough talent left to get us by.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

John,

As you well know there is work on an SB20 for three adults. Experiments have been made to sail2 up - there are too many strings and not enough hands. A child cannot cope either. In effect the boat selects a crew type, one heavy crew must be balanced by 2 lightweights. A 120kg crew and 2 at 75. All competitive crews sail to the weight limit (as in all the weight-limited classes) because the boat would sail better with more weight.

However, the cenral point is that the bigger teenagers drift away from sailing because there is no pathway for them.

As for windsurfing - can anyone remind me of the cutoff weight between ligh and heavyweight categories

On height - this summary of a work by a Nobelprize winning economist may provide food for thought
