I have been lucky enough to accrue a decent selection of mugs and glasses, I think these make good prizes and much better than small trophies or 'medals' (plastic type).
They do have a down-side though, one I was particularly proud of, a 3rd place glass from a windy and freakin freezin winter series was in the hand of a non-sailing mate who is the owner of many a tacky sports trophy himself (cricket, running) who said "what did you bother keeping this one for, 3rd's a bit embarrassing isn't it" at which point, I offered to take him out in late January so he can join racing for the day and then let me know whether he'd be chuffed with a 3rd place mug, or not..... bloody fair-weather sports people !! (he types in break while trying to put together the turbo-trainer) |

I remeber one club on the Thames where prizes were pewter beer tankards with the name of the event and the winner engraved. The tankards then went behind the bar, and used for serving beer. The beer was all the better for being drunk while being remided who had won a race or regatta some time ago.
In a club in France all competitors got 2 bottles of wine - last boat got standard Bordeaux the winner a couple of bottles of a grand cru classé (of a good year naturellement). Class! |

Most of the clubs in France give prizes to all competitors and normally, in wine regions, it's wine

Our club gives out the glassware in the same way as it has four the last 20 odd years. Very useful at home.
For a while at our phantom open when I sorted the prizes 1st place got a bottle of 5 year old cider brandy, 2nd was 3 year old and the other placings got burrow Hill cider. Lovely local prizes and cost less than the glassware and appreciated more, especially by me as I won the event. |

The cvrda returnable trophies are my favourite ones - all sorts of odd objects ranging from a painting and an I14 mastgate (funny no-one wants to win that) via a coppper nail in a piece of wood and a brass bell to a brass wingnut awarded for acts of what I can only describe as stupidity, such as our towing the mark when leading the fleet! Nessa managed an excellent prizegving at the Nationals with all sorts of new odd prizes which didn't just reward top places - persistance with spinnaker for example and "more (boats) behind than in front" for the boat just over half way up the fleet.
Club prizes and a few cherished travelling ones keep the glasses cabinet full - as if I hadn't collected enough when Esso used to do glasses free with fuel! Now the club is looking at pottery mugs I believe. Edited by patj - 26 Sep 13 at 9:32pm |
