   When I've run championships (in a class that has multiple age groups and disciplines within each event) we've used fairly small trophies with little difference between the one that is given to the overall national champ and the one that goes to, say, third place in the Grand Master's marathon. We order a bunch of trophies and a bunch of little self-adhesive plaques with the relevant place and event engraved on the face; for example "third place, Masters marathon" or "second overall".

 No one gets more than one trophy; if you win more than one award (for example, second overall, first master, first in slalom) you still get just one trophy but it has the three relevant plaques stuck on it. This can lead to some pretty frantic work for the race committee who have to stick 40 plaques onto 17 trophies or something between the final race and the presentation!

As noted earlier, the point is that those who are likely to win overall have plenty of other trophies at home. But to the guy who has turned up each year for a decade and finally scored a place in their age group, that result is something to be savoured and a symbol of that is important.

At club level from now on, our plan is to present something along the lines of a photograph of the sailor's boat in a wide frame, and the relevant plaques. Each boat will only get one photo, but at the end of every season if you win there'll be another plaque to stick on it. Again, the idea is that the club champion will have so many bits of tin that they'll be happy to just stick another plaque on the pic each year, but for the guy who has never won anything that one pic with one plaque will be something to savour - yet it will still be affordable for the class and that may allow some useful prizes (booze, kit, vouchers) to be given out as well.

	One of my clubs only gives out cups which have to be given back. Not only that, the winner is responsible for getting it engraved. It works fine. We do have separate prize givings for our regatta and one or two other events where the odd bottle of wine is given out. The easter series is a stroke of genius, the prizes are given on the monday so eggs can be bought half price or less... On the whole it is about recognition and getting your name on a trophy which goes on some other bugger's mantleshelf for years after.

	Chandlers vouchers have been used at our club for a few years, and whats more I believe they will sell them to you at a "small" discount if you buy a reasonable amount. I should add these can be used mail order as the nearest dinghy chandler is quite some distance away. I also agree with Jim though, for those of us that don't win much it's quite nice to have a keepsake.

	This year I went to a combined laser and mirror open on the south coast which was the most expensive open by a LONG way and they only gave only gave a bottle of wine for first laser and gave nothing to the mirrors! And it was only a cheap bottle!

	Its damn tricky. The people who won prizes all the time would rather have bottles pf good booze or something- I know of one sailor's house where every glass and half the crockery are engraved/printed. OTOH I still resent that the one time I won a prize at the Nationals the prizes had been forgotten and I have nothing physical for wjat was a big deal for me...

	All the clubs I've been at have given out the trophies you have to give back, then either glasses with things engraved or small plaque like trophiesthat moulder in a drawer until being thrown away 20 years later. If you are arranging things, see if you can do something more original. Maybe a small framed photo of the winner's boat, or a great scene from the club, or something locally bottled - I dunno, something that shows that thought has gone into it all. I totally failed to manage this when I was doing it - club politics got in the way, but if I was unfortunate enough to be doing it again, I'd try harder.

	Not dinghy development, more club development! What do peoples club normally give out at the end of year laying up/prize giving? Tropheys? Vouchers? Alcohol? Boat parts? A warm fuzzy feeling? Cheers then
