How long until someone like RS setsup their very own Scrappage scheme. Where they give you £2000 for you old beater. Be a good way of encouraging new boat sales. Break the boats for parts, sell them on ebay scrap the old hulls. Reduces the number of used boats on the market, encourages new boat sales. etc/ etc. Not sure it would work in the dinghy market and stinks of buying business. But hey, why not.
The chartering thing works well for the D-Ones, but the boats are mainly rented to those interested int he class or local sailors. In fact we always seem to have more people wanting a boat than boats available! I know we have talked about this before but i wonder how long it will be until there is some kind of lease deal on a new boat. |

I know it's just one suggestion but if the whole dinghy world adopted that approach you would kiss goodbye to all of the small clubs and the only places left to sail would be the commercial centres which might be too far a way to be worth your while in many people's cases. I know that if my only choice for sailing would be going over to Rutland a few times a year I probably wouldn't bother. |

Apologies it is not related to dinghy racing, but we get a lot of dinghy sailors from clubs / classes / businesses / groups of mates coming along and this is effectively what we offer - http://www.sunsail.co.uk/yacht-racing/gill-sunsail-racing-series The write up of the Series final can be found on the Y&Y home page - http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/166817/Gill-Sunsail-Racing-Series-Final Hassle free racing over a weekend!! It would be awesome to get a club v club or classes battle weekend sorted!

There was no fleet of 29ers anywhere a few years ago - all the ISAF and RYA has to do is say "this is the boat youths will sail if they want to get to the Olympics" and, provided the boat inspires the sailors (Hobie 405, anyone?) it will grow. I'm not sure whether it matters that the majority will stop once bank of mum and dad stops paying - better that they are in for a short while than not at all, and who knows, they might even take it up again as a retirement sport! And some will stick, and others do what some on here have done, and start again with a family in tow, so continuing the circle of youth sailing... |

As I recall the 29er was growing fast before ISAF and the RYA said anything. Indeed I'm not sure I can recall any time the RYA and ISAF sayinng "this is the boat" really had very much effect. |

I think it matters to you when you're stuck in that rut yourself Rupert. Being in your twenties with most of your (ex) sailing friends shaking their head saying 'why do you bother?', whilst the rest of them who are still sailing are so damn engrossed they're off to events every weekend or regular crew on yachts that demand so much commitment, the 'sailing si way life' somewhat shot the sh*t with their relationships, properties, careers etc. Well as neither one, nor tother, it leaves the 20 something would-be club sailor in a bit of a pickle with the only apparent option being misery week in week out with a handicap boat that you might just get a good weekend class racing once in a while.
So what's the answer? Well frankly I'm now beyond caring now and just accept the harsh reality of early adult life- it can suck, but if you work hard through it you can set yourself up for life. I read a study from a Linked In article that said most people's career paths are determined by the age 26... that seems remarkably young now on reflection. 35 next year and most of (ex)sailing friends are now returning to sailing.... and not in 'cool' boats, happy days. That said there are hubs of interesting developments.... I know if I lived near Datchet the MPS or RS100 debate would be raging in my head right now, but I don't so I'll pottle along in the SOLO until something better shows up with enough numbers to make it interesting.

I'm not sure there would have been dozens of yoofs at the Ovinton event all sailing 29ers if it wasn't an RYA approved class, though.

So the alternate is to create a 'pro' series with cash prizes, but it can only be sailed for in a specific group of boats. That's how I'd do it if I had the resources.
See what a $10,000 first prize at the end of the series with prize money going down to say tenth place would do to a class or group of classes. All you'd need is a sponsor and a group of boat builders with products to market and you'd soon see kids on a different pathway, maybe even some silver surfers as well. Anythings is possible if you have the cash and the will to change the order of things. |

It sounds horrendous... and no point the majority of folks who post here going, we're simply not good enough. Whereas at the moment, if I choose to, I can race against Olympic and ex-Olympic sailors in most of the non-noddy classes; the good ones even have buddy systems to ensure I learn from these guys and get something out of my weekend.
A Pro-Series for ringers to make some money... save yourself the aggro of organising it and write the cheque direct to P&B.

So, what's the difference between sailing against P&B sailors and the folk at the FOM?
Are you saying they are in another league? That Dan looked to me like he wouldn't be phased by them, nor I suspect would Lasernut & Fraggle, it's only sailing after all, that was always the joy of it to me, no matter how good you get, money can't buy you extra wind, like it could in the power sports I came from where if they weren't going fast enough they just bought a bigger engine. But you're missing the point, the point is to introduce a new class for kids to aspire to, so if all their pro jock heroes were racing in it rather than treading the Olympic path, it would be an alternate route to whatever the RYA were aiming their charges at. So that's how it could be done, is what I'm saying. Edited by iGRF - 19 Nov 12 at 5:41pm |
