How do your clubs decide the club champion in your clubs?
At Lee we used to ask all the people who had one a series across all classes to do 3 races on average lap basis on a single day. Due to bad weather we lost this event about 3 year running so altered it to who had one the most series in a season with a mixture of class racing and all in handicap series. The latter has in my opinion not found the best sailor at the club but he who turns out most. Please note I have won it this way but am definitely not the best sailor in the club so consider my thoughts impartial. So how do you lot think is the best way to find the club champion. We basically have 4 or 5 club 'Opens' a year, these have their own stand alone trophey's. But we also call them trophey days. These count towards a total series and the winner takes the club championships.

The three clubs that I have been a member of that had a "club champion" used much the same scheme. 7-10 single race 'trophy' events (to encourage turnout) spread throughout the season (to get different conditions) used as a series with 50-60% of races to count - usually a mix of handicap and the occasional pursuit race to mix it up. Current club has a 'premier trophy' series (first awarded 1880 something!) with four races spread throughout the year, and the trophy race series (8 races spread throughout the season). Both generally get the top sailors in the right end of the results - but (as Eric Morecambe once said) "not necessarily in the right order"

Simple - we don't have one. Can't say ever occurred to us. Sounds slightly elitist, really.

We don't have a club champion as such......over the 4 series across the year we can kind of figure out 'the best' sailor.
Actually, I'M our club champion in the '12foot pink dinghy with a 4 a 0 and a 9 in the sail number' trophy

Hi Rupert
Is not any form of competition elitist as somebody is going to win and somebody else lose? Soggy Nice idea, well being a phantom sailor I can imagine I would have a good shout at that one. |

I think ours is done via a series of pursuit races... as I've never been interested in the format I can't say I've lost much sleep over it, I couldn't even tell you who ours is, has been or in contention tbh.
I agree with Rupert- it seems a preposterous idea and frankly fairly meaningless, quite often the 'best' sailors at a club are the ones who are away doing campaigns and opens, not dodging Flying Fifteens and moaning about the Phantom handicap in the bar. We do however have another trophy, I thinks it's called the Commodore's Cup. Issued at the discretion of the Commodore to the club member who has contributed the most to the club over the past year. I've seen it awarded twice, once to a junior member who'd done absolutely brilliantly at an RS event, the second time to a long standing member who puts a lot in to the club, races every week etc Both were well deserved and I think this notion carries far more credibility than winning a pursuit race or two.

It Is meant as a bit of fun really.
Has every body taken a mister angry pill this week. At Lee it would be really great to see Matt Howard and Nick Craig flogging it out to see who is really best but it is never going to happen so it is left to us normal mortals enjoy ourselves. Some of us even do open meetings and Nationals as well! |

No anger, just 100% nonchalance towards it.
