Well in cadets that went one further because the poles were stored on the mast they would sometimes hang down and catch down the backs of peoples lifejackets and they would be stuck when capsizing, mostly this just lead to funny situations but resulted in a rules change.

but does anyone else have the problem of getting the back of their buoyancy aid stuck on the boom in a tack, leading to a capsize (normally still attached to the boom once in the water)
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

yeah sailing is a sport which has so many embarasing situations, i  think it is because so many funny things can happen or go wrong. unlike running for example which isnt really funny.

I keep on thinking of really embarassing things ive done now! there are thousands! as u can probably guess, I have an aquired technique 4 embarassing myself!

about 2 years ago (in my topper days...)i got asked by coach to take a small boy out sailing cos its his first time and he wants him 2 be in good hands (ha!) i launched my boat with boy sitting on the bow and i was barely a few metres away from the shore when my outhaul broke and i capsised, proceeded 2 hit a moored boat, and end up trying 2 save kids life!
fortunately he thought it was loads of fun! lucky me :S

I was once sailing my radial in about a force 5 close to the jetty and the boat began to roll and it came over on top of me, i tried 2 get over the top of the boat and on2 the daggerboard, missed and slid down the front of my boat on my belly only to gracefully dive head-first into the water, much to the amusement of the spectators on the jetty

i was on my windsurf board once and i was flying and the rescue boat decided he wanted to play chicken with me well i missed him lol but i fell off iin his wake. as he turned the boat he dug the back end in and the  a big bow wave was created. im good at windsurfing on flat water but if i hit a bump i come straight off espesially at the speed i was going

Yeah definatly an amusing time.

You know the small balck bouys that can be used as spreader marks etc, well a friend of mine ran over one of those with his boat and burst it, not only was he penalised in the race but was made to pay for a new bouy.

An embarrassing moment from race management - How about connecting the ground tackle and laying a 6 foot diameter (brand new) bright orange dumpy buoy as a wing mark, then hearing later on the radio that the Dart fleet are pursuing it towards the Isle of Wight in order to round it. (Race Abandonned). Got the buoy back, but not the ground tackle. Check your knots!

Or in the same event, someone else's embarrassment as their Dart rammed and punctured the same buoy (which was back on station). .Intersting watching it deflate across the bows, effectively anchoring the boat that still wanted to sail at high speed. That took a few minutes to sort out, partly becasue the RIB crews were laughing so much!
