Verily, '60's sailing is alive and well in the States.

Why does it need the extra hull? Surely the one in the middle is sufficient?

It's a Proa.
The weight of the out rigger adds righting moment when on that tack and the same out rigger provides extra bouyancy equal to the extra righting moment on the opposite tack. Which equals more sail carrying power for less crew or crew weight. I was thinking for a peoples foiler you could do something like that to a Moth. Without adding much weight maybe? Just mussing? |

Traditionally, Pacific Proas were double ended, so the ama stayed to windward when you tacked, as the bow became the stern and vice versa. However, the Atlantic Proa has the ama to leeward, but the tacking process remained the same - a rudder at both ends!
This appears to be a Pacific proa on one tack and Atlantic on the other. Must be odd to sail. I've wondered about the idea of having 2 amas which slide across the boat like a canoe seat when you tack, so you can always have it to windward, but have the stability when needed. |
