Hi Miles,

It isn't particularly easy unless you have the right tools, and it has to be milled from a suitable plastic that is hard but doesn't absorb too much water. I may be wrong but I think they were all slightly different in size, so you really need to find a tame engineer! It is more likely that you need to put shims in to stop the top of the blade fouling on the hull - don't cut bits off the rudder, you will regret doing it...

whats wrong with cutting the back edge of  the rudder blade? With the rudder shaft being taped, it seams the only way to get a better fit and remove play. When i spoke to Brian he said they all had this problem of touching. Having just anti fouled it will copper coat i do want to trash it again.

The shims at the top of the shaft are worn funny, any idea where to get these?

cheers miles

Try your local privately owned engineering machine shop.
They may beable to supply you with some DELRIN (plastic) washers and SS shims.
Never enough time for sailing

Would be most interested in learning how the 2011 season worked out for you .I race a J80 on Handicap and do OK but have had an offer for her which I find hard to refuse Am therefore in the market for a replacement . The 762 is one option ? Would even consider an Asymetric !

Great handling boat especially for the money, had 17 knots out of ours with just 4 of us on board. We have a asymmetric kit too, which is fun for reaching or a blast when short handed.

Thanks for the info Miles.  Was the 17 knots under spinnaker or asymmetric? We very occasionally manage 17knots down a wave in the J80, but she has a large sail, and is probably a  heavier boat.
Would be interested in learning the details of your rig.
