Projection 762 Help please?

   Andy, I enjoyed your post... We sometimes do well in light winds here but when the wind drops on the Forth it's largely about tide, here they hit 6m and last night over two knots of tide in 7knots of breeze (we were OOD). You could argue we don't get enough practice in the light as a result, but we've always found Hobbes sticky in the light... Tarbert in an X302? I wouldn't have expected to have set the world alight but I'm sure we would have done much better. .
Hadn't realised that Chia Chia was such a serious boat. I wouldn't want one though - I'm sure its owners love it but beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

	Boat I crewed on Chia Chia overtook us at Tarbert as did the new Corby Epoxy 25. Which one may expect. What peeved us was that Impala and Sig 33 (none one design so a DT33) that caught and stripped us despite a headstart of 5 mins. BUT that only happened on one day and the breeze was flukey. Chia Chia is so so quick and has just had a new keel, also got 6ft boatlength. SHe cost 200k to build in 1982 and has an age handicap from the Pope There is no way that Peter Whipp spent that much money with Green Marine back in the winter 1983 for the half ton worlds in Scotland. Possibly the 43 footer called Panda, but that one wasn't very fast! Good to hear that Chia Chia was going well and keeping the older boat in the chocolates. Plenty of good half tonners are about and quite capable of matching the Projection in all but planing conditions.

	So it should.. The Projection is only 25 foot!!

	It is about time that the IRC guys looked seriously at the race results of Projection 762's and made some significant amendments to their figures and produced a fairer rating for the boat. Yes, the boat can plane, but only under the most favourable of circumstances. It just don't have the upwind legs that real lead-mines like the Corby boats have. So in a normal club race after a 3 mile beat against the tide the Corby 25 can be uncatchable on the following downwind legs. In any breeze.

	Brys, I think that you are nearly right about that but it's the lead mines that need looking at, they can be sailed by a bunch of less than average sailors who sail rather than race them and still win despite making the wrong tactical moves with poor crewing levels and regular f**k ups! I know that Corby designs some rule beating race winners but it does seem that the boat with the most lead rules in IRC. The Projection with the increased hoist for the spinnaker makes a much more all round boat for most winds in capable hands and get's the chocolates.

	i dont think IRC needs to change how they rate boats, it is a rule designed for leadminers after all. The 762 was designed when CHS was about and as such had a bit more of a racer lean in its design, CHS changed to IRC because more people had cruier racers not racer cruisers (762). To get the best out of a 762 under the rule firstly i would say boat prep is paramount and then try to get as many horseys out of your poney as possible. I still think a 762 with a small prod and a 65m2 assy would be very quick, with a change to a 7/8 rig a la corby keeping mainsail and jib area the same but with less overlap (IRC likes this). if we still had the boat, time and the extra dollar...... With all that said we managed to have some convincing wins in the very light stuff, winning by over 20mins on corrected in a 1hr30min race, and also in the heavy. The 762 does fail in the middleing zone but good crew work can keep you within touch.

	Newbie Projectionist Just bought a projection and very pleased with her, couldn’t recommend the boat more. Acquired Pink Fizz a few months ago - GBR7634 now called Nemo (sorry owners of the existing Nemo) don’t consult with a 3 year old when naming a boat! Just getting to know her really but first impressions are great. She is now based in St. Mawes near Falmouth Cornwall. I traded up from a Hunter 707 and don’t regret it. 707 good boat but needs to be raced OD or generally useless under IRC – Its SBR OK. Boats seem to be selling for £10-13,000 at present dependant on sails, condition, kit and trailer condition. Worth every penny! Need to be careful about towing check car limits very carefully fully loaded with sails and kit the boat is likely to be above the limits on an average 2.0l car. You might be fine but check. Looking forward to long term ownership of Nemo! M

	Upstart on the way to line honours and a race win at the East Coast IRCs a few weeks ago. To add my 2p to the IRC debate - it's definitely something we get bored of talking about on the boat. Sure, there are conditions that suit us and some that don't but we'd rather blame our own performance than the handicaps - that's something we can do something about. Currently in out local IRC champs, we're sitting 4th / 22 after 5 races which has encompassed the entire range of wind conditions so it's perfectly possible to do well in IRC. We make sure we nail the results when the wind suits and scrap for every place when the breeze is less favourable. Much more satisfying than blaming the rating office!

	Upstart - Youre Right! Good debates though. With reference to Chia Chia - her second owner (bought her off Peter Whipp) told us that. Maybe youre right but she is Carbon!!! In the 80's - pretty serious boat! Went to Jockland to get the boat yesterday - back amongst it next weekend! New Nemo - Dont apologise The F Word is the old Nemo so you are unique once more. You mentioned not to let a 3 year old pick the boat name....... Better than letting your crew do it! (hence the F Word!)

	40 miler this weekend - 10 knots true all day with a 25mile fetch (not great for a little boat). 4th/17 in the end. Good party though Edited by TimC
